By the way, here's what a more recent review of Barbeque Inn says (from Zagat's). This is sort of my point about 6 year old reviews -- particularly when also including prices, but then maybe their most expensive is still $19.95? The newer review doesn't say.

"Changed menu changes the whole picture. Before would have been an excellent. Even the servers say the son has done nothing good for the restaurant. Food is still good but has lost so much it hurts."

All of these restaurants, with the exception of Lemongrass(which we didn't like) is indeed still open. This trip out our first stop will probably be Hamuara's Saimen.

FYI, the purpose of bringing this to the top was to try and get it in my list of trip reports and to change my member since info.

A Pacific Cafe (in Safeway Mall) was always our absolute fave, but closed 3 or 4? years ago. Was always hoping it would reopen, but it hasn't to my knowledge.

Sorry, iceeu2, I totally missed the idea that topping trip reports puts them onto your profile. Nor did I realize that's why you topped it. There is much to learn here with the new format.

Since I haven't had time to download my pix and do a TR from this Dec/Jan trip, I'll dawgpile on this update.

Yes. A Pac Cafe is long gone. Last we heard he opened up "808" in Vegas.

Sad to see the Lizard Lounge closed too. The Drunken Shrimp pasta was killer.

Coconuts just closed this past January but once they got rid of the lobster raviolis pffft.

Olympic Cafe still has good breakfasts.
Hukilau Lanai still an excellent dinner place.
Neide's in Hanalei was good.
Pacific Island Bistro in the Safeway shopping center was quite good.

La Playita Azul is shut down.
I think a lot of ex-La Playita's employees are now down the road next door to Kintaro's at Monico's...which has expanded and has beer/wine now.

Norberto's also has good Mexican.

Pizzetta's for a good lunch.

Kintaro's still good sushi.
Brick Oven Pizza has a 2nd location now in Wailua in the old Sizzler/Wailua Family restaurant.

Eggberts and Hula Girl were undergoing remodels and should be re-opened by now..

The Bull Shed's garlic tenderloin is still "onoliscious".

Lemongrass is still there and they opened some other restaurant right nearby. Name escapes me because we haven't done Lemongrass in years.

Puka Dogs still rock! They need a 2nd location in Kapaa or P'ville since Poipu is getting too congested.

There are two good ones across from Kalapaki Beach hut. Market Cafe and right above it a Mexican restaurant.
Both are pretty good.

And according to Mrs Kal's extensive research, Karen at the Islander still makes the best mai tai's.

And...Tropical Dreams for ice cream. I used to be a big Lappert's fan until I met Dan and Dorothy.

I didn't have a bad meal on Kauai, but the sushi at Kintaro in Kapaa and breakfast at Java Kai in Hanalei were my favorites.

Mrs Kal loved the Purple Hazes at Kintaros.

What in heavens name is a Purple Haze? Any of you eat at Caffe Coco in Wailua?

Yes, we just returned from Kauai and did enjoy a meal at Caffe Coco. The menu is limited, but everything is prepared very creatively. We felt like we were sitting in someone's backyard...in a good way!

Chambord and warm sake.
She loves them but only beer for me at Kintaros.

Well, that sake would put me in a blue funk!!! I'll take the chambord tho!!

Has anything replaced the former Whaler's Brewpub. I loved the location of that place and would hope sooner or later something would fill that vacancy.

We were in Kauai in Jan and loved, the Beach House, Duke's Gaylords, Keoki's, **Puka dogs and a great place at the Hyatt in Poipu. I cant recall the name of the place- they serve asian food and it is actually not in the hotel, but in the restaurant at the golf course. Food and service were excellent and reasonably priced. During daylight, there is a beautiful view of the golf course. We loved Kauai! FYI - we stayed near Puka dogs - wherever you stay, it's worth the drive. Enjoy! Mocat

Mocat..if it's the one that over looks the finals holes of the golf course, you are right.

We ate appies there after golfing one time and they were pretty good.

Whaler Brew Pub hasn't been oepend in years.
That area is becoming a "Ritz Carlton Residences" location.

Don't know if they will keep that little center open but it sure was BEAUTIFUL to sit up there and watch a sunset or see the ships come in/out of Nawiliwili and have some beer and munchies.

Mocat, the Asian restaurant at the Poipu Bay Golf Course you liked is called Yum Cha.

How about the Shrimp Station? Killer coconut shrimp with double killer dipping sauce. Seriously. Give me a bowl of that green papaya sauce and keep the shrimp. Not really, I want the shrimp, too.
