What's your favorite Colorado campground and why?

The Morefield Campground at Mesa Verde is my favorite because we always are treated to wonderful lighting storms there. One night we were sitting by the campfire watching sheet lighting in the distance. Over head there were stars galore. We went to bed and a few hours later we woke to lighting that was so bright you couldn't open your eyes and then immediately after the ground would shake as the thunder rolled in the canyon.

The South Mineral Creek (National Forest) campground near Silverton. The setting is lush and beautiful. The hiking from there can be challenging; the views on the hikes are amazing.

Some of my favorite camp sites have not been in developed campgrounds, but in wilderness areas along the Colorado Trail.

Smoke may be limiting visibility in some Colorado campgrounds right now. It's probably best to call the appropriate national forest ranger district to find out a couple of days before you begin your trip. I'm thinking of going to Mineral Creek for a couple of days this weekend to escape the smoke we have in Durango.

Paul what are you looking for? like travellyn we usally do not camp in "campgrounds" love the indian peaks wildernest area, you can access it from Camp Dick, a campground, you will need a 4x4 if you want to get away a bit. Lake Dillon in Summit County is nice is your looking for activities like boating, hiking, biking other ppl for your daughter to play with. we call that town camping.

You might let us know what your interest are and maybe we can help btter.

Definitely not looking for a KOA near the I-70! Looking for somewhere we can hike/bike and check out the stars.

I highly recommend the book. It gives you tons of info including most chosen sites, site sizes for different uses, things to do, services, scenery, shade/sun, privacy between sites, phone numbers, etc. I got it from Amazon.com in a matter of days.
