Fastset Route to Marin Co.

Will be staying in Half Moon Bay in late July & want to drive to Point Reyes on a Tuesday morning. What's the fastest (least traffic) route through or around the city to Pointe Reyes? How long to get to Union Square late Tuesday afternoon from Point Reyes?

From HMB, take 92 east to the 280 freeway. Head towards San Francisco on 280. As you approach Serramonte shopping center, drift into the left two lanes and follow the signs to 19th Ave. Get on 19th ave heading north & if you follow your nose & the cars in front of you, you'll eventually cross the Golden Gate Bridge. In case your nose doesn't work, 19th will enter Golden Gate Park & stay to the right & in the park you will make a sweeping right turn. You will exit the park on a tree lined Park Presidio Blvd. This blvd will go over the Golden Gate Bridge.

Once you get over the Bridge, look for signs to Ca Hwy #1. Hwy #1 will take you to Pt Reyes.

To determine how long it will take you to get back to Union Sq, time the trip from the south base of GG Bridge to Pt Reyes, and add about 20 mins to get from the GG bridge to Union Sq.

Getting from 92 to 280 might be a little confusing if you don't have a map - so here's some detail:

After you leave HMB, it's several scenic miles till you encounter a stop light (just past the giant resevoir). At the light, turn left & then follow the signs to San Francisco, to get on the 280 freeway.

Stu: Do you find that 1 is faster than staying on 101 to Sir Francis Drake? Always interested in faster ways to get to Point Reyes.

101 to Sir Francis Drake was often faster than Hwy #1, but not quite as exhilarating a drive!

I've never timed it - but the scenery, like Expert says, is majestic.

Oh, I know that the scenery is wonderful, and I love the drive on 1, especially when the road is relatively deserted. I was just wondering about speed, since the OP asked about fastest route.
