Famous Route 66
FAMOUS ROUTE 66
Planning a short trip to the Texas part of Route 66--Shamrock to Glenrio. (This is a test for two octogenarians to see if they should plan to drive from Texas to Oregon for a reunion later this summer.)
Is the west-from-Amarillo part worth seeing?
Is Paro Duro Canyon State Park a "must" compared with a few more ghost towns?
Any other tips about 66?

DH and I drove the entire Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica Ca. Pal Duro Canyon is one of the most beautiful areas anywhere in the SW. Well worth a visit. The Britten USA water tower got our attention. It was built that way on purpose and is called The Leaning Tower of Texas. West of Amarillo is the Cadillac Ranch, a row of ten old Cadillacs augered methodically into the land. The MidPoint Cafe has excellent food. A sign reads "When you're here, you're halfway there." Back at Shamrock you have the U Drop Inn,

I too did the whole route with my husband, March 2002. We took two weeks over it, with a week chilling in Ca, or should that be warming in Ca - boy was it cold along the way, except in Texas.
Palo Duro is lovely, really a must. Otherwise Marleen has pretty much said it all.
If you Google you will find lots of info on the Route. If you were doing the whole thing I'd say buy a really good guide, but as it is you can find enough info online I expect.
Amarillo also has the Quarterhorse centre which is interesting if you are into horses.
The petrol station in Maclean is also an icon.
Is the DropInn open now? it was closed when we went through.
The leaning watertower, though painted with Britten USA is infact in Groom.

We took a month on this trip. My DH was stationed out in Mirmar in CA years ago in the Navy, he hitchhiked much of Route 66 back then, to go home to visit. I wanted to take him on Route 66 for a surprise, which I did. I spent four months gathering information, books, directions etc. It was one of the best trips we have ever taken, and we have traveled all the states except Hawaii together in the 20 years of our marriage.
