Wanting to plan family vacation (3 generations) for 1999 to the Islands. Interested mostly in Maui, Kauai and Big Island. Up to 15 people (Condos a must) some for one week some for two. Ideas on locations or accomodations. Moderately priced options?

Chris, we are heading back for 7th trip in Feb. 99. If you se3arch around you will find property listings for all the islands mentioned. We most always stay in hotels but I have some comments. Maui- check in the Kahana area, it's just north of Kaanapali and the condos are not far from the beach.
Kauai- I prefer the Poipu area. It has the best beaches and lots of condos near the water.
Big Island- There are numerous condos in the Kona area. As you go up the coast (Kohala) you run into the big resorts. I recommended a condo at Waikaloa to friends last year and they loved it. I don't have any idea of rates but this is a start.

In Kauai look into the Embassy Beach Vacation Resort - new as of 2 years ago, just beside the Hyatt and quite nice, a condo with cocktails and continental breakfast included. Call 1 800 Hampton for this one. On north shore Hanalei Bay Resort is supposed to be nice. In Maui the Sands of Kahana have a 9 out of 10 rating in my condos book or look into the Wailea Condos - Ekahi, etc. On the Big Island There is a condo property right in front of the Hilton Waikoloa Village which is a tourist destination unto inself- I think they are called the Waikoloa Villas. They looked really nice and were beside a plaza. I would not go to Kona, unless I missed something, there was not much there.

Menahune Shores Condos on the South side of Maui are lovely, and were relatively inexpensive last year. Great view of the whales in February-March, and the South side of the Island gets less rain than other areas of Maui. Let me know if you want more info and I'll dig up their address and phone #.

Thanks Bart, AnneMarie and Debbie for your responses. Good suggestions all. Bart, I stayed in Kahana on my honeymoon 9 years ago so I know exactly where you are talking about. It might not be a bad idea to revisit the area 10 years later! AnneMarie, I liked the info you had and am particularly interested in the ratings you spoke of. Debbie, I stumbled across some info on the Menahune (spelling?) Shores while surfing the net, it looked promising as well. Trying to look into package deals that include airfare, lodging and rent-a-cars for now. Seem to be a plethera of companies out there! Wish me luck.

I am looking for a condo in Maui. I have heard from a travel agent that Kannapelli Shores and the Whaler were nice properties. Has anyone stayed at either of these properties?

The Whaler is a good bet. It's on a beautiful stretch of beach with fantastic views of both the ocean and mountains. The Aston Kaanapali Shores is more of a condo style accomodation and there isn't much of a beach there. Any questions- e-mail me!
