Family of six in need of info about Schlitterbahn?

Is this water park a good place to visit. We are from Canada are am looking to a vacation for next May/June. Which airport would we fly into and how far to Schlitterbahn? How far to other attractions like San Antonio, Six Flags etc. Not familiar with much in the area if you have suggestions. Is the resort onsite at Schlittebahn good and the food expensive or relative to Disneyworld? Thankyou!!!

Schitterbahn is a large waterpark with rides for all ages. It is very crowded on weekends. I stayed at the on site hotel/motel, and in my opinion is was NOT nice at all. I have heard that it has been rennovated since my stay a couple of years back. You can fly in to either Austin or San Antonio (SA is probably closer). I belive that the trip from either airport is approx an hour as well as to Fiesta Texas, Sea World, etc. Hope this helps.

I absolutely loved Schlitterbahn!! I had only been to one water park (don't have too many in Oregon) and loved it and we were only in one part of it! I would probably fly into San Antonio. The drive from San Antonio Riverwalk area to Schlitterbahn was probably 45 minutes...? I can't remember.

I think the resort at the park isn't the nicest but it might be ok to stay for 2-3 days. Would recommend doing the park during the week and then moving for the weekend so you don't have so many crowds.

You would need to rent a car to do everything, but the distances are manageable.

My recommendation would be to stay at the Schlitterbahn for a few nights - you'll be there before anyone else in the mornings and can stop mid-day if you want. Move into San Antonio and stay near the Riverwalk. See all the stuff and stores on the walk, take a boat tour and then spend a day or two at Six Flags.

Food is probably Disney World comprable. Don't remember as many options, would probably leave the park for dinner. I think the park has places with kitchens, perhaps this might be a good option.

Have a great time - can't wait to get back!

Hi Tara

My husband and I (no kids) spent the last week of May 2002 in San Antonio and really liked it. I definately would recommend flying into San Antonio airport. It's only about 15 to 20 minutes into downtown SA (Riverwalk area).

Six Flags, Schitterbahn and Sea World are all within 45 mins to an hour of drive of SA (you will need to rent a car). The drives are really easy and you get to see some of the hill country area of Texas. We went to each one of these attractions when we were there and enjoyed most of it (very, very hot).

Schlitterbahn is worth the trip but just be ready for a big crowd especially on weekends. We waited for over 1 1/2 hours on line for one of the "water coasters". We also found that the signs/maps to each attraction within the "parks" were a bit confusing to follow. However, there is a lot of workers running around that can point you in the general direction of specific water ride you are trying to find. Check out their Website (I believe its www.Schlitterbahn.com) for some useful information.

We found that both Six Flags and Sea World were a good time. However, it gets very very hot there at that time of year and we had to take a lot of "shade" breaks because most of the "water rides" and waterparks located in each park didn't open up until after June 1st. So keep that in mide when planning your trip dates. consideration.

I would also recommend staying on the Riverwalk in SA. There are a lot of hotels (Rivercenter Marriot, Hyatt, Weston, Holiday Inn etc). Lots to do, including Boat rides, musical shows, trolly rides, the Alamo, Ripley's believe it our not museum and the Mall with Video places and movies for the kids. Plenty of restuarants etc. etc.

Have fun.

YEs, this is a great place to visit! I suggest that you stay a the Resort at the Bahn, NOT the Resort at the Rapids. I suggest that you stay there at least the night before and the night of your visit. I think in the summer it is a 2 night minimum anyway. You should make your reservations soon, since by winter/early spring they are booked well in advance.

Get to the park before the gates open, and head directly for the most popular ride, the Master Blaster. You may still have to wait a bit, but it's worth it. If you get there early, it will only be a 10 -15 minute wait, as opposed to over an hour later in the day. If you can travel there say Sunday and Monday, I believe those are the least crowded days.

you will have a wonderful time!

There are several hotels in the New Braunfels area besides the ones at the resort. You might want to stay there for at least one or two nights of your trip so you can spend a little while in New Braunfels itself.
Here are just a few websites to check out:

As others have said, you can fly into either Austin or San Antonio. In May or June, I would almost suggest flying into Austin and driving to New Braunfels. The wildflowers should be blooming and it would be a pretty drive.

There is so much to do in San Antonio and in many of the surrounding towns and cities. If your stay is a relatively long one, you might even consider a drive to Corpus Christi or the Mexican border.

Have a great trip!

We are San Antonio natives who won a two-year pass to Schlitterbahn last year. It is a WONDERFUL park, with lots of huge shade trees and a very laid-back, family atmosphere. The food is almost as pricey as DisneyWorld, but the good news is that Schlitterbahn allows you to bring your own food and drinks in! You simply bring a cooler and plunk it down on one of the hundreds of picnic tables around the park. (Since you are traveling, you could buy a cheap styrafoam cooler and basic food supplies at the grocery story once you arrive.) You can leave shoes, towels, etc. on the picnic table all day and no one will bother it. Just make sure to lock valuables in a locker (available for rent for $4) Have fun!

Schlitterbahn was voted the number one water park in the U.S. Besides the great water rides it is covered in trees which keeps everything much cooler.

I have stayede at the Resort several times and love it. It is not fancy but it is great to be able to go to your room anytime (the rooms are IN the park). A lot of rooms have kitchens stocked with utensils.

We go the week before Memorial Day in the middle of the week and we almost have the place to ourselves. It has always been warm enough.

New Braunfels is a German town and has several good German restaurants.

This is one of our favorite waterparks. Although the water is cold! They have such beautiful landscaped rides and areas for kids of all ages. I DEFINITELY would not stay there the rooms are quite dingy and mildewed. There are plenty of hotels in the surrounding area. Many times the parks closes down due to afternoon thunderstorms..that would be the only advantage to staying on site.

At Schlitterbahn you can bring your own coolers with food but no glass and they do search the coolers. It is a cheap way to eat.

We love Schlitterbahn and the New Braunfels area! If you want to stay in the park, go with the understanding that the rooms are not the best, BUT you are in the park. We like staying on the river, too, for float trips. The water IS cold but it's fun on a hot summer day. Beautiful "out west" kind of area with SA and Austin so close by. So much to see and do in those cities. Either airport would do--I'd base my decision on prices of flights and car rentals. Pick up food, supplies and an ice chest in the city where you arrive, and you'll be good to go!

Good luck with the planning and enjoy your trip!
