Eyeglasses in NYC

Hey Everyone--

I'll be in Manhattan on Friday don't have any time until then to grab some new eyeglasses while I'm at home. I have my prescription and everything, but I'm just going to get some glasses while on my trip. Can anyone recommend a good place that has a wide variety of frames and lenses at a reasonable (for New York) price?

Thanks in advance..
LC

How long will you be in NY? We have Lenscrafters , of course ("glasses in a an hour" but many other discount places order things specially for each customer and take a week or more to get the frames)

I will be in Manhattan for five days. Yes I was looking more for a place that offers glasses preferable in one hour, or no more than 24 hours.

Your best bet is still Lenscrafters. They have many locations all around Manhattan. There are obviously other chains, and expensive eyewear boutiques, but they will be expensive. If you are looking for value, checkout they coupons from your local Sunday paper. If there is a Lenscrafter coupon, bring it with you - they are honored in all theri stores.

Lenscrafter is the best pricewise, and it's fast. The one at 20th St. and 5th Avenue has a huge variety and lots of designer styles. Definitely bring a coupon - sometimes you find them in the Sunday paper. It can save you $50 or more.

Here's another recommendation for Lenscrafters. Here, they're having a 1/2 price sale on all lenses, not sure about NYC. If they break, or your prescription turns oot not to be suitable, you'll be able to straighten out whatever once you get home.

Be advised, however, that some locations (geographical, not stores) cannot accept out of state prescriptions! Eye doctors have licenses to issue prescriptions only where they are licensed, so do phone ahead and check.

I've gotten really good prices at Unique Eyewear on 34th Street but like most of the "local" places that aren't chains, it's highly unlikely that you'll get turnaround within five days.

I would highly recommend you get your glasses at home where you get them adjusted easily if there are any problems. Also, if you are getting certain lenses, such as progressive lenses, these will take at least several days to turn around. I would only recommend getting a pair out of town as an emergency replacement if needed.
