Evening Weather in Manhattan

In late May, early June are coats, jackets nececessary in the evening? Would a light jacket or sweater be OK.

I live in San Francisco so I am used to cooler weather, but still like to be comfortable.

By the way, I am the only Nina that I know, but it looks like there are at least three of us who post to this board.

Yes, a light jacket would be fine.Today is supposed to be near 80 so who knows if that light jacket will be needed! But twin sets and light jackets are good at this time of year.
SF is a tiny bit cooler I seem to remember ... but so beautiful!
Nina, there are lots of Kates on here too

I seriously doubt you'll need a light jacket or sweater in Manhattan in late May/early June. In fact you'll probably need shorts and tank tops. Bring a long-sleeved shirt and a waterproof windbreaker or anorak in case of rain, but leave your other stuff behind. You won't use it. NYC is MUCH MUCH warmer May-Sept than San Francisco.

P.S. Obviously I'm a clueless male. What the HELL is a twin set? Sounds horrible, like a housecoat.

LOL Ted:
A twinset is a sleeveless or shortsleeve top with a matching cardigan sweater. It can be worn with the top or put over the shoulders when it is a bit warmer.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I am more interested in evening temperatures than daytime. after theater etc.. if the day is hot or warm, do the evenings cool down considerably?

In San Francisco you can have a warm lovely day, but then the fog rolls in, and the evening can be cold. That's why we always tell visitors to bring a coat. I was wondering if the same is true there.

Me again. Do you get much rain in May - June? Are they short bursts or entire rainy days? Heavy or just drizzle?

Next I'll be asking for exact times ;-)

It doesn't cool down after dark like it does in the Bay Area, which has very cold ocean currents just offshore. In fact, because of all the concrete & buildings, Manhattan stays very warm all night long.

Please, please don't bring any twin sets. They frighten me.

Nina,
The twin set is perfect for a cool evening [if there is one] and also for air conditioning. We can have rain hang around all day, and if that's the case, you will want an umbrella and/or a light waterproof jacket. There are lots of things to explore if the weather is rainy, but you do have to get there first! The temperatures will not drop by that much at night. It's usually still quite warm at night at this time of year.

Ted, you are sooo goofy
Twin sets can be found all around you, watch out!!
Nina, the evenings could be on the cool side ,I think, and if it is very warm, the a/c will be on and that will make indoors chilly too.
We have been in the midst of a drought so rain has not been an issue for so long! You can figure the occassional shower might happen, but doubtful at this moment.
What are you thinking of bringing? I think a light jacket will do fine, keep you warm in the a/c or a cool evening. You can just bring an umbrella if thatt is a worry-or you will have my luck, it never rains when I go on holiday
Sometimes we have those SF days, warm in the sun, chilly in the shade-but No fog
Kate - sorry if this was rambling, too much caffeine?

Kate, you asked what I was bringing - well I had thought about twin sets, but now I don't want to offend, or frighten Ted

Basically, I was thinking of a light jacket, and/or short sleeved tops with lightweight overblouses or sweaters.

In S.F. we consider it to be a beautiful day if it is in the lower 70's. I have seen 'visitors' bundled up on days like that, and they have told me that they are cold and had expected much warmer weather when they had been told that it would be 'warm' here.

I was in Manhattan the first week in June last year and it was cool in the evening, so definitely bring a sweater or jacket in case!

Hi Nina, it's the nina who lives in a suburb of NYC. I would definitely bring a sweater or a light jacket (trench coat) in case of rain. I wouldn't bother with a coat. If it is unseasonably cool, you can always wear the sweater AND the jacket.

I just came in and my car thermometer read 82 degrees, tomorrow it is supposed to hit 90! It's probably best to keep an eye on the forecast right before you leave. The weather here is extremely variable in the Spring.

Oh and Ted, I love twin sets. Very versatile. Let me know where you live so if I'm heading your way I'll warn you!

Yes you need things to keep warmish in the evening. I've lived here for about 35 years. I never go out at night without a light sweater in my bag. I like silk or linen sweaters--these are for movie theatres and restaurants more than for the outdoor weather.

You can need a raincoat or the equivalent in May or June, though less than you used to.

I would not expect to wear a woolen twinset at this time of year, it isn't that cold (i.e., not like how it can be in London), but one made of some other thing would be nice--silk, linen, cotton, some modern thing. Also I can be happy to have something like a pashmina shawl in my bag for the evening.

UES
The sweater tied around the shoulders thing kills me. Reminds me of my 91 year old grandmother.
Twin set.
Hilarious.

It's 11PM, April 15, and the official temperature in Manhattan is 76 degrees. My terrace thermometer reads 77.3 degrees. That should answer your question.

The one problem with today's weather, is that next week it could be in the 40's again, it IS still April
