Escape from Waikiki

We're thinking of a holiday on Oahu but am really not interested in concrete jungles. Can anyone recommend areas outside of Waikiki that offer good accommodation, pleasant environment, good beach and grass area and safe swimming. Thanks in advance.

There is a nice hotel on the north shore of Oahu called the Turtle Bay Hilton. There is the beach and grassy areas. That's the only one I know of outside of Waikiki and Honolulu. The swimming will be rough if you go in the winter though. You would be much better off going to one of the outer islands for some peace and quiet.

Bill,

There are two great beaches that are about 45 minutes to an hour or so from Honolulu - Kailua and Lanikai. They are supposed to be some of the most beautiful beaches ANYWHERE! The accommodations in those areas are mostly B&B's, and there are very good restaurants, etc. I think Kailua may be exactly what you're looking for. You could do the historical things around Honolulu but spend most of your time away from the city. (I personally LOVE Waikiki for a couple of days! Then like to go on where it's quieter.)

Have a great trip!

Bill,

A P.S. to my above post - Go to "alternative-hawaii" website, under "accommodations" go to the B&B's on Oahu, click on "windward Oahu", and you'll find a lot of info on the B&B's, the beaches, in the area I'm referring you to. It's a beautiful website with a lot of good info about the islands.

Bill -

I can't comment on hotels but while on Oahu, you must go to Haunauma Bay (sp?)

It's an old volcano, half of which collapsed into the sea. Result? Beautiful, colorful fish and coral, etc. Only time I ever snorkled in my life and I will never forget it.
