Hi. Very familiar with it. Our 12yo loves it as do her friends. I think its lots of fun & the food is so so unless you love banana splits. The prices arent too high for NYC; its a 50s theme place with singing waiters & the patrons often sing too (often poorly). Lots of birthday parties, biggish groups. "wholesome" fun & folks. A bit of luck too---who is in the "audience" & how peppy the waiters happen to be. I think its great for kids & teens. They also have a show in the lower level that is said to be quite good: FOrbidden Broadway.

I have a better idea than the Stardust Diner.. that's just a diner and it's fun and all, but MARS 2112 just a block away is much more fun for kids if you asked me... anyone else ever been to Mars 2112? You get into an elevator to enter the restaurant.. in that elevator they give you a little show before you enter MARS.. then the entire restaurant is full of martians and it's like a maze where you can tour the entire place.
IT's a huge place too!!
Check out the site.

It's right across from Ellen's Stardust Diner, up one block further.. and it's sort of on the lower level.. you'll see a crowd of kids at the entrance.. really cool place.

Mars is dreadful! Awful food, totally unimaginative considering what it couldve been. Basically, nothing for the kids to do but use arcade machines. Thats is an experience you could have anywhere.
Ellens is really unique. It has survived for years which in NY is proof of something (not sure what, but something!)
