Eerie Canal vacation

We're renting a canal boat for a week in August and will be traveling from Syracuse through the Finger Lakes region. Any suggestions about towns we should dock at, hikes we should take, restaurants accessible by foot, things we should see? Thank alot.

Hi Phyllis,
We posted a message earlier. Do a search for canals and you'll find our posting with some suggestions. We're still looking for docking and restaurant information also. We're going this month.

Phyllis,I would be interested in some more information on the canal boats. What's the company that you're renting from/do they have a website? Is this a summer only activity? What kind of boating experience do you need? We will be visiting family in that area in October and I just started researching things to do. This sounds interesting, would love to get some more info. Thanks, Patty

Hey, Syracuse Sam, how do you know? Maybe the canal they're going to is, like, full of sea monsters or something.

Hi Patty. We're renting from Mid-Lakes Navigation Co., Ltd. I found rental companies through the ILoveNY.com site. Get to that site, then go to Things to Do and there is a listing for Tour/Cruise/Rental Boat Operators. The rental companies are listed under Self-Skippered Charter Boats.
I think the season is May until November. Good luck. Phyllis

A very nice place to dock in the Rochester area would be in Pittsford (a charming suburb of Rochester) at Shoen Place. There you will find a grouping of restaurants, shops and walking paths built around the canal ... several are right on the canal and the rest are on the other side of the small side street that the businesses are on. Also, well within easy walking distance is the "4 corners" for the village of Pittsford with a few more shops and restaurants, a casual pub type restaurant with some pretty decent food (Pittsford Pub) and a more upscale restaurant/lodging (The Depot).

Hope this helps in your plans. It sounds like fun. You may find several nice areas along the canal in the Rochester area, but I would definitely recommend stopping in the Pittsford area.

Definitely agree with stopping in Pittsford - Fairport is also nice.

Pittsford is one of the richest suburb of Rochester - very quaint.
