ekscrunchy, you are right! In the 18 years I've lived here, I've seen the alligator population become non-existant.

Umm, try the Boston subway system, the Rome subway system, and the Metro in Paris. I have not personally observed critters in the Underground in London, but I have no doubt that they are there.

Well we may have rats but it has been years since I've seen one of those creepy alligators here in NYC.

Who knew that those cute pet gators we bought in Florida would get so big...and eat so much! There was only one remedy and unfortunately they ended up underground! But those were the bad ole days!

I think those of us who are people watchers, like me, tend to look at the occupants ON the platforms, and rarely notice the rats.
My husband, on the other hand, tends to look at the rails and often mentions the huge size of the rats.

Penn Station Southbound 1,2 or 3 train. Every morning on the tracks at least one is searching for food.

Ah, I think rats live in all areas that large numbers of people and their garbage populate. Subways are a favorite haunt as are any structures adjacent to the subways.

In my high school years I had a part time job in Filene's Basement in Boston. For those that are familiar with the old basement store, it's basically in the subway. Before opening, in the quiet and unlit underground space, it was not uncommon to hear if not see rats moving about the racks and tables of merchandise.

And, as someone said, rats can be very large. The first time I saw one, perched on a clothing cart in the stock rooms, I too thought it was a larger and different animal.

Rats can't be eliminated, they simply move away from areas where they are targeted and infest a different neighborhood. Anyone have the experience of meeting new rodents when a construction project starts in your neighborhood? Yikes.
