The streets of the French Quarter have been miraculously cleaner in the past couple of years because of a young entrepreneur who started a waste services company after Katrina. Here's an article: http://www.sdtwds.com/articles/wastenews.pdf
Everyone seems to love the cleanliness, the fresh scents, and the cool black trucks with the white bull logo. Now, this newfound sanitation is being threatened by budget woes and New Orleans politics. So far, it looks like the black trucks will keep cleaning up the city: http://www.wwltv.com/topstories/stor...t.329dc3c.html

Patrick, I'm so glad to hear you are out and about and traveling again. I am sure some places must trigger bittersweet memories but it sounds like you are enjoying most of your experiences. Take care -- I'm looking forward to further trip reports!

Oh P~What a great trip report. I, also, was thinking how bittersweet it must be to travel without Lee. I am glad to hear some parts of "The Big Sleezy" are up and running. I so love those antique shops on Royal Street.
BTW~Have you read "The Deluge"?

And it seems so hurtful when a waiter comes to the table and says "just one?" looking at you with pathetic eyes as he removes the extra place setting. I'm not sure I'll ever get used to that
Patrick, having been divorced for 25+ years, I found an easy way to reflect this type comment. I always reply, "Actually, I'm expecting Matthew McConaughey. When he comes in, please show him to the table." Or Mel Gibson. Or xxx Always makes me feel good!
Love the trip report and I'm so glad you decided to venture out on this solo trip. I know it may be a day-by-day, one-foot-in-front-of-the-other existence still, but you are old enough to know that time does eventually help.
Looking forward to your London trip report! (Or is it business only?)
Paula
PS I've only eaten at Chef's tables a couple times. How does one find out if a particular restaurant offers this? Does someone know of a website or do we just have to call?

Oh, Sarge, I love that comment. I'm not too keen on Mel Gibon, but I'll happily tell them I'm waiting for Matthew McConaughey. Or maybe "Dame Edna's supposed to join me, but she's so undependable."
Most websites seem to mention the chef's table thing. I generally book on Open Table and sometimes just ask there in the comment box about that. Most places will respond back. I used to think of Chef's Tables as being manned by the actual chef and often a specific menu, but these were called that, even thought they are a counter facing the kitchen, not a table, and you just order from the regular menu.
London for business? Heck no. I'm fully retired now. Seeing two shows a day for 7 days (although it looks like there's no way to do two on Monday!)

Hi Patrick
I really loved reading your New Orleans report. I only live about 3 hours away in Pensacola, but don't get over there nearly enough. The last time I was there my sister and I went for a day trip at Christmas.
Thanks for all the food reviews, I'm hungry now.
Have a wonderful time in London! Here's hoping for a trip report when you get back!

annesherrod,
Yes, the chili cheese omelette from Camilia's is out of this world. I love dipping the fries in the chili - mmmm...
I actually make an omelette modeled after the chili cheese omelette from Camilia's...

Patrick, thank you. What wonderful memories you dredged up! We took our Mom for M Day before Katrina. Have been afraid to go back. Brennan's is a favorite of mine also - we visited in '81 when my daugther was only 4 - didn't order her the Bananas Foster because we thought we would share, when she started crying the waiter actually made her a portion and didn't charge us. Personally, I love Petunia's Eggs Benedict on Eggplant (I can't think of the name) for breakfast. Commandor's Palace, Gallatoire, Antoine's, Gabrielle (I heard they haven't reopened), too many places to name.
The people were wonderful. Next time, it's the Acme Oyster House. Unfortunately, my Mom and sisters don't do oysters in any form.
Can't wait to hear about London - haven't been since 2002. Want to go back. Only two shows a day! That's my kind of vacation.
I loved the answer about "waiting for ...."; sorry, but I just have to steal that line in the near future.

Patrick, Ok, now I've caught up a bit with what you've been doing and I see you're already providing the rest of us information on how to weather the slings and arrows... I love the idea of suggesting Dame Edna as the person who will be joining you. What a hoot. Hope she does sometime. Can't imagine a more fun gossip.
