still needing help planning special 50th birthday for my wife

I am looking for recommendations for upscale accomodations in Miami, preferably on the beach. We have not been to Miami before so don't really know the best area to stay. South Beach sounds nice...Key Biscayune? Coconut Grove? I called the Ritz Carlton and was told the best nightly rate was around $700...a little steeper than i was hoping to pay. We just want a special place to stay, in a nice area, close to shopping, dining, etc. I know all you saavy travellers can help! G.

How about the Delano? You get a lot of bang for your buck, I think. The location, decor, the pool, the beach, the food, the drinks... everything is dramatic and luxurious. However, I have never actually stayed there; just gone in and wished I was.

I looked at price and the seem to be about half or less than the RC.

The Tides! It's in South Beach, and there are LOTS of things to do there at night.

both the Delano and the Tides look terrific...and I am getting the impression that south beach is THE place to stay in the Miami area. Any suggestions on dining and can't miss things to do in the area?

The Delano all the way. Beautiful property. Walking distance to shopping and dining.
