Durango-Silverton Train

The train ride sounds like something we would like to do. Suggestions please on which level of seating to purchase tickets for. Bus back or take train both ways? Thanks!

We did the cheapest and it was fine. Do whatever you can afford.

Definitely, bus back. One way is enough!

It depends on what time of year you are going but I would do something other than open-air coaches. We enjoyed the train both ways.

Don't wear light color clothes, the ash can be an issue.

If you only go from Durango to Silverton, sit on the right hand side. If you only go from Silverton to Durango, sit on the left hand side.

While everyone has their own preferences, I would suggest one way - especially if you have any time constraints. While the views on the ride are lovely, it can be a lot of the same thing, especially if you have kids or teens with you. Pack a lunch as the few places in Silverton to eat are packed with folks from the train and sadly, the food at most is lack luster and expensive. Pick up goodies at Albertson's Supermarket, right near the depot or for a real treat, go to Guido's to get some excellent Italian fixin's.

We like the Pickle Barrel if you choose to eat in Silverton.
