Driving I-81 to Penn

Any suggestions on things to see, places to
stay and places to eat on our trip to our new
home in Pa. Driving from Ga to Pa by way of
Roanoke, Va. Never been in that part of the
country. Thanks, PM

Hi! There is a town north of Roanoke called Natural Bridge, famous for "Natural Bridge", one of the seven wonders of the world. Also, north of there is a town, Lexington, home of Virginia Military Institute. It is a nice little town with B/B and restaurants, etc. Further north, there Harrisonburg, home of JMU college, and then a town above that famous for civil war things. Good Luck!

Sorry, but Natural Bridge is far from being one of the wonders of the world. The Seven Wonders of the Natural World are
1.Mount Everest in Nepal
2.Victoria Falls in Zambia/Zimbabwe
3.Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA
4.Great Barrier Reef in Australia
5.Northern Lights
6.Paricutin volcano in Mexico
7.Harbor of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Back to I-81. Not much to wow you but very pretty scenery. Maybe a side trip to Endless Caverns or Luray Caverns in the upper 200+ mile markers. Cheap gas prices at exit 118, Christiansburg.

Hey , I live in the area you are driving. Natural Bridge is kitchy and a waste of time as is JMU and Roanoke in the time you have. The best thing to do is to drive it straight through with these possible exceptions . ( And just FYI and to show the memory is fresh, I just drove that stretch of 81 in August).

If you have time, Get off 81 at Roanoke 581 spur , see the Farmers Market Downtown if you must ( say Hi to Tony at the large Corner market and ask him how my Grandfathers Mortgage Lifter Tomatoes sold this year ) and get some food at Corned Beef & Company.... then go back out 581 to 81 North . Drive about 90 minutes and take the 64 East exit to Waynesboro, Charlottesville and Richmond. Stop and spend the night on top of Afton Mountain ( 64 E MP 100) if it is that time of day. Next morning, go East 25 miles on I64 and take the Monticello exit AFTER the Charlottesville exit. Spend a half day at Thomas Jefferson 's Monticello.... trust me , worth every minute... take the tours ... do not hurry !!! Then get back in your car and drive back to 29 north. Take this through hell traffic due to gentrification and poor local government for a few miles and on up 29 north for a total of about 18 miles to Ruckersville where you can turn left onto 33West. Take this a few miles to the Skyline Drive NORTH. Make reservations through the Park Servive at Big Meadows Lodge and spend the night there right on top of the Blue Ridge.... quaint but comfortable but spectacular scenery.... Continue NORTH on the Skyline drive to the next exit Rt 211 ( Condit country , Luray area) from Skyline Drive and west onto I 81 North again.... spectacular detour as I have outlined.... then just speed on up 81 to Pa where the only thing of real note is the Battleground at Antietum/Sharpsburg which you can catch as Pennsylvanians later...and the beautiful Susquehanna and Delaware water gaps.... hope this helps ...e-mail questions...

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Check the website for Natural Bridge---it states.......one of the seven natural wonders of the world! Don't assume your information is correct and mine isn't!
Also, it is a matter of opinion if it is cheesy or not! You certainly didn't waste any time giving negative feedback about Natural Bridge and JMU, yet you didn't give any suggestions of your own!!!!

Also, to the person who suggested going to Charlottesville.......that is very far out of way from what the person asked for..which was Roanoke. And, I thought Monticello was a rip off....it was pricey and it was a guided tour...you go into a large home and you only get to see the first floor! So, like I said.......it is one person's opinion versus the other. All we can do is give our insight and let the inquiring person decide for themselves!
