>>Hwy 1 between SF and Santa Cruz is scenic but not as dramatic as Hwy 1 in Big Sur.

Going that way is faster but he'd miss Henry Cowell -- However there are redwoods aplenty at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.

I completely agree with what both Patty and Stu said about the coastal drive from San Francisco to Santa Cruz.

If you want the most scenic route to Carmel - here is what to do:

- Get on 280 heading out of San Francisco. If you are staying downtown, you can pick up 280 there or get on 101 & then get on 280 very soon while you are still in San Francisco. Don't try to pick up Hwy 1 in San Francisco.

- Continue on 280. It will become a designated "Scenic Highway" once you are past the Millbrae Ave exit.

- You'll pass a couple of more exits, and then after you pass the Hayne/Black Mountain/Golf Course road exit (I live off this exit) look for the sign to Half Moon Bay and get off 280 at this Half Moon Bay exit. This is still an extremely scenic drive. Do not continue on 280 to hwy 92.

- Once off 280, turn left & follow the road south. Soon you will hit a stop light - this will be hwy 92. Turn right on hwy 92. Still an extremely scenic road.

-Follow 92 to Half Moon Bay. Extremely Scenic. At the first stop light, get in the left lane & turn left on to Main St in Half Moon Bay. Main St is a very nice browsing & shopping street once you pass over a small bridge. If you feel like a coffee - do so.

- Continue south on Main St & it will eventually merge with Hwy 1. After a couple of miles, you will be out of Half Moon Bay & you'll see pristine coastline.

- Continue on hwy 1 to Carmel.

I drove the N-F road about ten years ago in my new Volvo. I still can’t get the stains out of my underwear.

LOL!

I drove on road like this before, and I won't mind taking it as long as the weather is decent enough.

Thanks for that detailed driving directions, I'll take this into serious consideration.
