My husband and I were in Dubrovnik and took a public bus to Split for a day trip.

Looking at a map of Croatia you will see that a small part of Bosnia and Herzegovina juts through Croatia to the Adriatic Sea.

The road the bus traveled passed through that area and required a passport check.

We didn't know we would be "leaving" Croatia, although momentarily, and would need our passports which of course we did not carry with us that day.

Luckily it was pre 9/11 and our driver's license saved the day.

Lesson learned for us.

We drove from Dubrovnik to Split in November. As mentioned above, you do drive through Neum, Bosnia but there wasn't any passport control and there wasn't even a sign telling you that you are entering Bosnia so it should be a non-issue. We did enter other parts of Bosnia and had to show our passports, but this stretch wasn't one of them.
