Driving from DFW to Austin

I am headed out of Dallas today for Austin - should have posted this a few days ago and sort of just forgot - I have GPS and my Iphone.

I am leaving in non-rush hour and should arrive in non-rush hour...

Just want to make sure I am not missing anything along the way - We have only been in Texas about 18 months and so just realized I might wanna ask

Other than ranch/farm land there's not too much between DFW and Austin except Waxahachie (interesting small town), Hillsboro (Outlet Mall), Waco (College Town), Temple/Killeen (Army town) and Salado (craft village).

Just get to Austin and enjoy. Hill Country is close and the bluebonnets are starting to pop. Dunno if that will be as true further south, but right around the corner from our neighborhood in DFW they've started to bloom.

Whatever you do, just bypass Salado. Very, very unimpressive. Google it and you'll see what appears to be a very cool place. Just not so.

I agree, just drive straight through to Austin.

What area did you pick for your rental??

The town of West is a speed trap. Also there is a great bakery in West just off I-35.

Won't miss a thing if you drive straight thru. Hopefully you have reserved accommodations. Everything sold out.

In Waco there is the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame as well as the above mentioned Dr. Pepper Museum.

I am not sure if I-35 through Austin is ever "not" rush hour!

Hope you made it safe and sound, MomDD. It was never a good drive, but since NAFTA, it's terrible with all the big rigs, and never-ending construction! Ugh. Have fun in Austin, and I hope you get out into a little of the Hill Country.

Yes, knew it was SxSW... not a complete fool ;-) - well, it is still going on - I have a close family member in the music industry - had a whirlwind few days - am back in Dallas!

I might have to do a trip report on this one...oh my!

I will go back when it is not SxSW but thus far... Austin in by far my favorite city in Texas! Even with all the crazy SxSw stuff...

musicfan - I am not sure that my trip report would help out anyone...but I may do it. I was there with someone in the music industry for SxSW and it was a little "insane" but I might have a few tips

That sounds intriguing! I love live music, but I'm not sure even I could take the intensity of SXSW. I would love to hear whatever you have the time to share, but if not, no worries. Have a nice weekend!
