Driving from Denver to Telluride
We are planning a trip in late May to Colorado. We're flying from SJC to Denver, arriving in the early afternoon. We'd like to drive less than half way to Telluride that afternoon. Any suggestion on where to stay overnight, including which highways to take would be appreciated. We'll probably do the same on the way back, any other location or driving ideas would be great. Thanks all!

OK, here are some thoughts in addition to Glenwood Springs. You could drive south on I25 and stay the night in Colorado Springs. Then the next day go a bit further south and then head west through Salida, Gunnison to Montrose and then head south on 550 to Ridgway and they drop over to Telluride.
Vail is eat [before] Glenwood Springs, and would work nicely.
You could go further west on 70 to Grand Junction and then head down to Telluride from there the next day.

Any of these sound good?
If I can help you with Telluride and the vicinity, please let me know. I am about 75 miles from there and can give you my two cents!

Salida would also work for just an overnight. There are chain motels; if you want a B&B type place - I have a friend who moved here last year from Salida. I can ask her.
Crested Butte is a bit more than halfway and is north of the road [50] that you would need to take to Telluride. It would add travel time going north in the afternoon and then south the next. That said, it is a really nice place.

Thanks Deb, that gives me more to think about. My husband has been to Telluride 4 times, so he has things to show me. I may want more info about Ouray and Silverton. I can check your other posts, which I've noticed in the past. I'll be posting again closer to May. I haven't been to CO in over 30 years, so I'm getting very excited.

If you could also check with your friend, that would be great. Thanks!

Just talked to my friend - she recommends:
http://www.gazebocountryinn.com/index.htm
It is conveniently located, so there isn't any wasted time going off the main drag in the afternoon to get to a place and then having to get back to the main drag the next morning.
Hope this works.

Hi. In Glenwood, during one visit we stayed at the Glenwood Springs Lodge right across the street from the pool. It was sort of price-y for the basic room - $150-plus I think - and that was several years ago
The last time we were in CO was 2 years ago, and we just stayed at the Holiday Inn Express - I think b/c the Lodge had a minimum # of nights, but I could be wrong. Express was OK, nothing to write home about. But there you had to drive to the pool.
We love Crested Butte, too. That's about a half hour out of your way off 50, but a neat town and I think worth a visit.

Thanks Deb, the Gazebo Country Inn looks like a very good option and location for us.
Karens, we may check out either Glenwood Springs or Crested Butte for our overnight on our drive back to Denver. Thank you also.
