It's only about a 5.5 hour drive from Denver to Custer. There so much to see and do in the Black Hills that I would spend all my time there. No need to make it a 2-day trip.

If you haven't made plans to see anything in Colorado, then spend the one day/night in Estes Park visiting Rocky Mountain National Park. Well worth the slight detour and with a car, you can see a lot of the park, which is spectacular, and very different scenery from South Dakota. Do a search on Estes Park in the Colorado forum for tons of information.
