Driving from Atlanta to Manteo N.C.
Hi all, we are coming over later in the year (November) we are flying from the UK to Atlanta we have to go to Manteo (Work thing) then from there it is all holiday,
So ideas suggestions please of route or places to stop en route from Atlanta up to Williamsburg / Manteo please? As we are thinking of the following route
Atlant to Williamsburg / Manteo , then down to Myrtle Beach, Charlston, Hilton Head, Savanah - Atlanta/UK
We are taking approximately 3 to 31/2 weeks in total for the whole trip, with 1 week already booked at the Ocean Palms Hilton Head Island (can't wait!)
Suggestions would be gratefully welcomed for 1 or 2 night stop off points to visit on the to add to our itinerary,
Thanks

Thank you, by DH doesn't want to go near the mountains, he says November could be VERY cold. I have heard of Raleigh / Durham but do not really know anything about it? I will have a look.
Are there any small towns, perhaps that are sort of on route, which are worth a nights stay?

As suggested, I85 toward Manteo. It is over 600 miles, and as we say down heah, "the back of beyond". Then 6 hour drive to MB. I would go further south of MB to Litchfield or Pawley's for a MUCH nicer area of the coast--20 miles makes a big difference.
How far do you want to drive the first day?

Then stop in Greenville SC. Nice city, pleasant people, and easy access. You may also want to stop in Raleigh.
Do realize Williamsburg is out of your way. It's a straight shot from Raleigh to Manteo (sort of). Mind your speed through the small NC towns. Ask me how I know.

Ok thanks, how do you know?
Yes we know Williamsburg is out of the way, but originally we were flying into Washington, and I have wanted to go to Williamsburg for a long time, so we thought we would keep it in the itinerary anyway, as it maybe a long time before we travel across to the US again, and there is just so much more we want to see!
Hilton Head we are staying for a week to chill and relax, Myrtle is work for my husband, (but just a tiny bit)
I will look at Greenville and Raleigh, is Fayetteville worth seeing?
Thanks

I got a stupid ticket. First one in 35 years : 0. That's how I know so be careful.
Unless you really enjoy US Army stuff skip Fayetteville and keep going. It's home to Ft. Bragg, a huge Army post. I worked there for a while and know that stretch of I95 too well.

Well, rather than Raleigh I would suggest Hillsborough just off I85 near Chapel Hill. Charming little historic district. Or go to Chapel Hill if you're going to stop up that way. I would still say you don't have to stay IN MB. And there would have been other nice choices than HH.
