You can drive from Hearst Castle to Los Angeles in one day, but don't unless you must!If leaving Hearst Castle in the morning around 9:30 AM, you'll arrive in Santa Maria just in time for a fabulous lunch at Chef Rick's. (Check out chowhound.com for rave reviews! Take the Clark Avenue exit and turn right. Chef Rick's is in the shopping center on the Northwest corner of Clark and Bradley.) Drive south and take "the pass" the 154 through Los Olivos and do some wine tasting! You're onle 30 minutes from Santa Barbara which is one of the most beautiful parts of coastal California. I would stay a night and explore. Then your trip the next day to LA will be relaxed and leisurely. Depending on day and time, the traffic will be "not the most relaxing" from SB to LA. Have a great time!

Check the tour times... they might have late afternoon tours that would work. I think from Carmel to Cambria will be at least a three hour drive, more stopping along for views, lunch, etc... If you stuck with your plan for getting into Cambria in the late afternoon, having dinner (try Robin;s) and then hitting the Castle in the morning, you could have a late lunch in Santa Maria and arrive in SB in the early evening. Not sure what your preference would be... wine tasting or getting right to SB for night. I'll check back in case you have more specific questions.

"Robin's" in Cambria is one of my favorite restaurants!!!They have a delicious salmon bisque that I always order. If the weather is nice I like the covered patio (covered in vines); if it is cool, I sit inside next to the firplace. There is a lovely cottage garden in "The backyard."
