Driving cross country - what MUST I see?
Hello everyone! I'll be driving from LA-NY in August. I'll have about a month to travel. Anyone with advice on what I should see/do, where I should stay, best routes, etc.? I'm on a tight budget, but want to make the best of it. Any pitfalls I should avoid? Any and all advice would be so appreciated. Thanks!

Take a photo of every oversized plaster animal, person, landmark. Tacky and fun, and people will give you the weirdest looks when you make a big deal out of it!
Suggestions:
Blue Moon, (Minnesota or Wisconsin?). Life size Jolly Green Giant at rest area.
Huron, SD. "World's largest pheasant."
Council Bluffs, IA. "Golden Spike."
Paul Bunyan here, buffalo there, here a prairie dog, there a six-pack of beer...

Hi! I'm actually taking the southern route. So far, I'm planning on going to Sedona, AZ , New Orleans, North Carolina, and a detour to Orlando. But I don't know anything about these places or where I should stop in between Arizona and New Orleans. thanks!

Between Arizona and NO I'd make a stop in San Antonio and Albuquerque, with a side trip to Taos and Santa Fe. In AZ, make a side trip from Sedona to the Grand Canyon. There are also other side trips from Sedona, like Cottonwood and Montezuma's Castle. From there drive to LV, seeing Hoover Dam on the way. Then it's a 5-hour shot to LA. That should just about fill up your month, I think. That's nine very full days of travel time, and two days each in San Antonio, Albuquerque, New Orleans, Taos, and Santa Fe. Three days in Orlando and Sedona, one in the Canyon. That leaves you five days to spread between North Carolina and any other place you want to spend them, with a little bit if "fudge" time in case something holds you up. Woith the 7 days travel, you'd almost have to stick to interstates (DULL!, UGH) Best route would be (from Orlando): Leave Orlando and get to I-75N. Then take I10 W. This goes nust N of New Orleans. When you leave NO, back on I-10 to San Antonio. Then I-10 across TX to Phoenix. I-17 almost to Sedona. After Sedona I-17 to I-40 into LV, and I-15 into LA. That's really simplified and I left out all but the major routes. I think you figure out the rest with a good map. Sounds like you can have lots of fun. Wish I had a whole month to travel our great country.
