I totally agree about driving!! Train travel in the US is an adventure in money and time travel--late and long!!s LOL
Nashville in winter should be as interesting as any time with the exhibits and Graceland and music, which is good if you like that. If country music isn't a real grabber for you, you could go a slightly more southerly route for other sightseeing.
There is Asheville and the Biltmore House, which if you wanted to, you could also see en route to Nashville, without a real detour--just a slightly different route (I81 to I77 at Wytheville, VA to I40 at Statesville, NC). That is what we originally said would be about a day's drive (about 12 hours or so).

suewoo, so I did! That would have been tragic, to be without TP for the blizzard of the century.

Gretchen - Graceland is in Memphis. Maybe Opryland? Opryland is actually gorgeous around Christmas. It's beautiful all the time, but they go all out at the holidays and leave the decorations up through New Year's. And the traffic out there is much better after Christmas than before - my brother was stuck for an hour or two on the exit ramp one year trying to go see the lights in mid-December.
