Driving Chicago to Vermont in the fall; Please recommend best/most scenic route
I'll be driving from Chicago (actually have to go to South Bend) and then east towards Vermont. Could you recommend the best route?
Is South Bend to Burlington doable in a day? Or would you recommend stopping somewhere? If stopping, where would be a good place to stop?
Do the tollroads cost a lot?
Would you recommend going up through Canada?
I haven't driven this entire length for some 25 years, so any help you can give me will be very much appreciated!

I would recommend 2 days. From mapquest, it looks like 9 hours to the Finger Lakes of NY (80E-71N-90E). Cheap lodging around Auburn, NY or nicer B&B's/hotels & sightseeing around Skaneateles, NY.
The next morning would be another 5 hours to the middle of VT.Consider a mid-drive break in Saratoga, NY.

Thanks, Nice!
I'll try to plot your route on mapquest. You're correct, it does look like a two day drive.
On my overall US map, it looks like 90E dips southward and then there's quite a long south-north stretch along 87. This is why I started looking at getting on I94 from South Bend to Detroit, then across the northern shores in Canada on 401, then there's a short dip down from Canada to Burlington. What do you think of this second route?
Any other East Coast experts who can give me a hand here - please?!
How are the crossings at the US Canadian border?
