drive from williamsburg to dc

we'll drive from williamsburg to dulles in september on a friday to return a car rental at noon.

can you recommend a route?

can you estimate drive time?

bob wants to visit the air museum near dulles. it opens at 10:00 am. do you think we can stay 1 1/2 hours there, then get to the car rental office by noon?

thanks.

I-95 is probably the fastest way . . be aware that morning rush hour traffic will be ugly if it is a workday.

We spent most of full day at Udvar-Hazy . . it is huge!

I think Rich meant I-95 in his second message?

I actually wouldn't go all the way to I-495. You can get off of I-95 near Manassas and head NW over to the Udvar-Hazy.

This is the route we take from to the Dulles area from Wmbg:

I-64 West to I-295 North (to DC)
I-295 North (to DC) to I-95 North (to DC)
I-95 North to Exit 152B, VA-234 Manassas ByPass
VA-234 to VA-28 (to Dulles)

The trip is a solid three hours and Rich is right about possibility of traffic issues. I don't know how much rush hour is a factor near Dulles at 10 am on a weekday but all of the roads mentioned here are commuter arteries.

Glad to help. Must also mention that Rich is right about how much time you can spend there. My husband loves that stuff and you would have had to literally pry him out of there after only 90 minutes on his first visit.

Happy travels!
