Drive from San Jose to San Simeon
Hi, we're an engaged couple who will be driving from San Jose to San Simeon, but the problem is that it will be in one day's time. We have appointments to keep, but have that one day to drive down Big Sur. I wanted to know what was the must do that day, would stopping at Cannery Row for breakfast/brunch or driving this famous 17 mile drive be a "not miss?" The drive down the coastal highway is the high point, just wanted advice about if we should not miss a particular highlight. Thanks

Given your time limitations, my choice would be to skip the 17-mile Drive in favor of the great views you will get on Highway 1. Also, rather than spend time on Cannery Row, I would spend a little time in Carmel and Cambria (six miles south of San Simeon).

There is a good place for a brunch in Pacific Grove at the American Tin Cannery complex, called First Awakenings. It was even on one of Rachel Ray's Foodnetwork shows. I think I've gone there ten times in the past 15 years, and it's been great every time. If it's lunchtime I like Bahama Billy's at the Carmel Barnyard. Also Red House Cafe in downtown Pacific Grove, is great for both breakfast and lunch.

I live in Pacific Grove. The above two postings are good. I would skip 17 Mile Drive on this trip as you will be pressed to drive San Jose to San Simeon, do the tour and then drive back. You have a full day ahead of you. It is only 90+ miles to SS from Carmel, but it can get slow. Book your tour for SS prior to getting there on the internet so you will be guaranteed a time.
