drive from LA to San Francisco

My first time ever in California, and I have to drive on a sunday by myself up the coast. If you had to pick one thing to see, besides the coast what would it be? The castle, monterey, etc?
Thanks

If you enjoy architecture, Hearst Castle is an amazing site to see. Take Tour #1 and enjoy seeing another era in time.

Dear Brian:
Do you meant to say you have only ONE day to drive up the coast?
If so, I'd skip lengthy tours like Hearst's castle.
You can make it to Santa Barbara by breakfast, followed by a walk along the beach.
I'd try to get to San Luis Obispo by lunch, and put in a quick visit to the old mission (since it's Sunday, you could also attend the service here or do early Mass at Santa Barbara Mission).
I would not attempt CA 1 along the coast if I had only one day and were unfamiliar with the road. Relax and take your time.
Stop at a winery or two near Templeton/Paso Robles and take in an other mission or two (San Miguel and San Juan Bautista are close to US 101). You could cut from Salinas to the coast at Monterey for an early dinner and a postprandial stroll. Then could take CA 1 to Santa Cruz andslowly toodle up the coast route to S.F. (stopping to watch the sunset if the timing is right.)

Brian, the coast road is a wonderful stretch of road but a long drive from LA to SF and also narrow and winding from memory. Hearst Castle was a highlight on our 3 week trip a few years ago. I think the tour was 2 hours. We found it fascinating and would definitely go back there. Safe driving.

if you like wildlife, lobos state park on the monterey peninsula is fantastic--you can do short (20 minute) hikes through the cyprus groves and watch sea otters from the cliffs (which are the most entertaining animals you've ever seen)...

I agree with Pt. Lobos and then take in the 17 mile drive.

Brace yourself, the traffic is horrible during holidays and around the major cities.
