We're thinking of using priceline or hotwire to try for a deal for a downtown Denver hotel in MAy, but not knowing Denver at all, are concerned about how large an area they draw around "downtown Denver."

Our whole point in wanting to be downtown is to be walking distance to sights, restaurants, maybe baseball park.

Does anyone know, if we only bid for a four star hotel (we have time to wait the 24 hrs. more than once to re-bid without changing anything), if we're guaranteed to be walking distance to things, or whether there are any 4 star hotels that wouldn't be?

Your assumption is probably correct that 4* hotels would be within downtown proper, but not necessarily walking distance to the ballpark.

Cherry Creek is technically in Denver, but not considered downtown. There is a 4* hotel there.

Check out www.betterbidding.com for the Hotwire list for Denver and then check on the map. With Hotwire you don't have to worry about the 24 hr rebid limit.

As a local I looked at the area and it is huge. Not sure how to advise you. One big advantage to downtown Denver is the 16th Street Mall and the very frequent free shuttle running the length of the mall -- Capitol to the train station. That makes it very easy to move though out the downtown area with a min amount of walking. And bus connections to more outlying area is very good from either the Market Street station (about the middle of the 16th Street Mall) or pick up points along 17th and 15th. You can easily get to Cherry Creek shopping area, or the zoo or the science museum via frequent buses.

I just got the 4* downtown Denver Warwick hotel for May 2-5 for $95 on Priceline. The hotel site says it's about 1 mile from many attractions.

Also many free rebids for 4* Downtown Denver on Priceline. I bid 5 times today with free rebids.

I would view Warwick on the edge of the downtown area. About five blocks east of the 16th Mall which is the heart or core of the downtown area. The area around it is not very interesting.

Thanks to all. Might keep looking for a condo for the week, instead. We have 7 nights, as some of you know from my other thread, so we'd been going back and forth with whether to divvy up the time different places, or base in Denver and do day trips when not staying in the city. If we do the latter, a condo makes more sense. Any day now we'll make up our minds ;-)

We were lucky to draw the Sheraton..4* on Hotwire in downtown Denver. It was perfect for us as we arrived by train and it is on the 16th Street Mall with the free shuttle bus which was very frequent. Our other option might have been the Warwick which is discussed above. We found using the Hotwire map showing the regions was essential..If you browse around you should find it there.

Sorry, that was Priceline for the Sheraton, not Hotwire..it was in May 2010 and $89 or $99...about half the Sheratons best offer.
