dolphins

My family and I will be travelling to Florida in June and is still debating whether we should swim with the dolphins. I've read the threads on the pros and cons and I'm still indecisive about it. Does anyone know of places to go and rent a canoe or sail for the day and actually see dolphins swimming in the wild? Any phone numbers or sites would be helpful.
Thanks a bunch.

hello...people say it depends on where you go, but really, i've had a bad experience with them. i think it's when the weather is really hot, they get very cranky and get aggressive. good luck!!

where in Florida are you going? typically the areas for canoeing are in northern or central Florida on rivers, sailing is done off either coast.
We usually don't canoe in the open waters.

I'm hearing more and more about the harm in swimming with the dolphins. The treatment program I work for is taking clients down to Key West this summer to go out and see the dolphins but not to touch.

As far as sailing do you want to rent a sail boat or go out on a sail boat ride?

A number of places in Sanibel and the Keys that have boat trips to see Dolphins in the wild where they belong. Do a google search for Florida Dolphin Excursions and you should get some info.

hi......it is possible for dolphins to attack when the get cranky and aggressive. i recently went swimming with the dolphins close to Palm Beach and almost got my hand eaten off. There usually friendly animals but they can act like sharks when prevoked. So, I would definately suggest not to wear bright colours or grey because they might mistake you for tuna.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

why would any one say that dolphins attack!!!!!!!I've been an dolphin lover for years and swam with on numerous occassions and they never shown agressive behaviour. But of course.... if you act like a dummy in a wet suit making those beautiful animals do stupid trips or hang on to them so they can drag you around like some stupid idiot, then of course they would be aggressive and atack. i would too!!!!
And for the person who said that the dolphins would mistake them for tuna if you worn grey... that would only happen if the person(and im sure that Marvel does) as the same IQ has a piece of tuna.

So Monica....I would definately suggest swimming w/ the dolphins although i do not recommend it for small children although be aware of sharks in the wild that might follow the dolphins.

If you have any questions please do not hestiate to contact me at (516) 582 1097.

Ab - Our family is travelling down to palm beach first then heading down to the keys. I'm now thinking of seeing the dolphins as close as possible, not necessary to swim with them. Any good suggestions?
Dolphin Lover - Any good companies in Palm Beach or the Keys to see the dolphins up close? What about the Dolphin Research centre?

If you're not interested in really swimming with the dolphins in a controlled environment, you might want to try http://www.wildaboutdolphins.com/
We did it a few years back and it was neat. You go pretty far out into the ocean and then Sheri puts on music, sometimes Enya, sometimes Pink Floyd. And the wild dolpins come around and swim near the boat. We did go in the water to snorkel, but didn't see anything. But the ride itself, with the music and seeing the dolphins in the wild was really a cool experience. Sheri is very careful about treating the dolphins the right way. Two were getting romantic and she just steered clear of them so she does not harass them in anyway' she doesn't cater to the tourists just to see a dolphin.
