Dog Quarantine Changed?

I was recently told that Hawaii no longer requires quarantine if the owner has proof of rabies/shots/health certificate. Anyone have experience with this?

Well, it's been changed. It can now be 5 days or even less. Go to this website. It's got info and forms you can download.

Yes it has changed, but it's a much more extensive procedure than simply proof of rabies/shots/health certificate. The link posted above gives the details, but you need to start planning several months in advance.

Mrs Kal always makes sure she takes my shot chart before we go to Kauai or overseas.

A client of mine is in the waiting period right now. you have to start about 120 days in advance...send a blood sample off to a lab, get it back, have your dog chipped, and have various vet certificates.

If you do everything correctly, you will be allowed to either bring in the dog with not wait or at most a 5 day wait. If you make even the smallest mistake, it will be 30 days of jail (for the dog).

We were going to do it for our dog here in Hawaii, so that he could come to the mainland with us, but even our Vet said it was too confusing!

And assume that anything that can go wrong will go wrong. The blood serum test is done at the University of Kansas. We sent our cat's blood sample in plenty of time, but about three weeks later I got a phone call from UofK telling me they had my paperwork but no blood sample to which to match it.

There is a vet in Kihei who knows the process very well and is willing to work with mainland vets to help them. Of course, even that won't help if the lab misplaces your sample or paperwork.

Ditto what the above posters said. It is not as simple as just a rabies shot and health certificate; it is a very complicated process. You will also need to obtain an identifying microchip from the state of Hawaii and have it injected by your vet. It took us over 7 months of planning to get our cats ready to fly to Hawaii, they qualified for the shortest quarantine which was 30 days at the time. It was a very tiresome process.

Veterinarians that practice near military bases are usually up to date on quarantine requirements since their clients are often relocated to quarantine areas. I wasn't aware that you needed to obtain the chip from Hawaii. There are different chip systems, however, and you need to make sure the correct one is used.

You no longer have to order the chip from Hawaii. Avid and HomeAgain are the two manufacturers in the US and their chips are compatible. There are foreign-made chips, such as PetHelath out of Canada, that are not compatible, but your vet should not be selling them to you in the US
