Merc,

Wow! You can pay $4500 for a suite and you're not a gazillionaire? Let's see. Before I'd be willing to pop that kind of coin on a hotel, I'd have to have, oh, maybe a minimum of 10 million in the bank.

Anyway, what's it like being so rich? I wonder about it sometimes. Is it really cool? Are people resentful? Do you get bored with the whole idea? I'd be interested in any non-personal insights you'd care to share.

Enjoy your trip!

Merc, if you didn't want people to post an opinion on spending so much for a suite, then you could have posted your query to omit the cost of a suite at the plaza. I think you are just bragging.
Finally, I know a few older couples that have assets/income greatly exceeding one million, but they aren't billionaires by any means. Most of these people grew up during the Depression, and know the value of hard work and wise investing. They have nice homes, nice cars, and take nice vacations, but aren't ostentatious with their money, and would never consider spending soemthing like $4500 for one suite. Most of these couples that I know also are very generous to charities, their church, etc.

Merc, I am just so fascinated by your continuing posts. Let's see, your only criteria was that the suite have a jacuzzi for your "escort." Did I understand you that the Plaza is the only hotel in NYC with a jacuzzi? Why don't you try some other cities that have a greater share of jacuzzi? Why do you need three bedrooms? Are you a pimp, running an escort service?

Hey merc, what kind of name is that? I don't know no guys named Merc. Have you been to bed with your "friend" yet, or are you expecting the $4500 suite will seduce her? I got a cherry red pickup with a camper that I've been real lucky in. I"ll rent my lovemobile to you for $60. a day, and you can drive your friend in style after you have wooed her. Think of all the money you will save.

If the camper's a rockin', don't come a knockin'! Nothing turns a chick on like a Winnebago. Forget that $4500 suit. That's way too much to pay for a set of clothes that won't even fit right.Chicks dig jeans and tshirt, not no suit.

Sorry, Merc, old chap. Didn't mean to offend. I just thought you might want to chat about your world. Never mind.

Anyway, folks, I think Merc is for real. Here's why:

He posts a UK e-mail, but uses UK spellings for certain words. A kid would never pull that off. He knows a lot about New York suites, and based on Neal's post, he seems to have gotten his facts straight. His writing is succinct with decent spelling but a few typos, suggesting a person who is educated but perhaps not the best with a keyboard. He hasn't flamed anyone, although he surely has been provoked more than I could tolerate. As for why he is personally involved in planning the trip, maybe it is for something special and he wants to make sure his underlings don't bungle the arrangements. As for wanting a bunch of bedrooms, I guess I'd want a whole lot of space for that kind of money. Heck, they'd have to give me the whole floor!

By the way, Merc, are you sure the price is $4500 US? Is that for more than one night? Could there be a currency mistake? I dunno.

Anyway, the only thing I will take issue with is Merc's claim that he is not rich. Merc -- you are rich by any reasonable measure, and it is nothing to be ashamed of.

Sorry, Cindy, but I think you've been snookered. What makes you think that just because he's from the UK he's got to be for real?
And if he is for real, he's a pompous boor.......but rich!
Either way, why are we wasting our time?

No-name,

My use of the term "for real" wasn't a judgment of Merc's character; just an opinion on whether he is really a rich guy seeking advice, or a pimply teenager with a shiny new computer.

Anyway, I've given up trying to figure out who's legit on this board. If someone's snookering me, well, it wouldn't be the first time, and it only costs me a few key strokes.

Take care.

Posts like those from Laura and Cindy and noname always make me shake my head in disgust. I realize it's human nature to want the best one can get for himself or herself, which often leads to jealousy when others have those things. I came from "nothing" and have become very comfortable at a relatively young age. I enjoy traveling as much as anyone who reads these forums. I enjoy researching and planning trips myself (no "personal assistant"). I put forth a good deal of effort to find competitive travel packages because it's the financially responsible thing to do. But on occasion I like to really splurge. I've occasionally stayed in Presidential Suites at Ritz's and Four Seasons in the US and similar in Europe and Australia.
Why, then, should that imply that I must, in real life, be some sort of freak or boor (noname), pimp (laura and anna), or prima donna (cindy)? Very small minds, I must say. Not that I'm surprised. Those around me who have known me for years fully expected such arrogances from me as my life changed, and it was obvious to me what they were thinking. With time, however, they realized that I wasn't any different and that it was OK for them to treat me as they always had, though, the jealousies sometimes still surface.
This kind of nastiness sometimes appears on Fodor's (rarely on the Euro or Aussie sites) when questions regarding luxury trips arise. If this was not an anonymous site, I suspect things would be different, just as in real life. Interesting to watch people's true feelings come through, though, when they can remain faceless. Human nature is not innately or generally a thing of beauty.
I'm sure merc appreciates being called a pimp because he wants to create a memorable vacation. Anyone remember the movie "Officer and a Gentleman"? Smacks of the same small minded attitudes the factory workers displayed toward Deborah Winger. Sometimes people get what they deserve in life.

Sorry, Anon, but you seem to have confused me with a nasty person. I never called Merc a prima donna or anything like that, so please don't put words in my mouth. If I recall my posts correctly, I think I treated Merc with respect and I even defended him when a few others pretty much called him a selfish phony and a liar, and I gave my middle-income guesses about the legitimate reasons Merc might have for doing what he is doing.

Sorry you took offense. None was intended.

Thanks anon, it's good to know i'm not alone. However, if I had known how much bother(hurtful verbal abuse) this message would have created, I certainly wouldn't have written it. As for mentioning the price, I do think that it was relevant because it enabled me to put the plaza suite into context with suites at the other hotels which, for what I'm getting at the the Plaza, were a great deal more expensive. Therefore, I apologize if I came across as being "pompous" but i'm not in the habit of boasting about money, just someone who enjoys researching their own vacations and trying to do as good a job as possible.
On a different note, can someone clear my confusion and explain how one reply states that the Plaza public areas look run down and worn, while another writes that the hotel has been well restored and maintained. Strange?

To Anon: Speaking of pompous boors! Your acquaintances' initial opinion of you was accurate. You are arrogant! You've claimed the title from Merc.
And, oh yes, I'll match stays at elegant surroundings with you any time. Jealousy? Hardly!
And Merc, have a good time wherever you end up.

Wow...such vitriol.

Anyway, I walked into the Plaza last summer just to see what it looked like. I had never been to New York, and I could not afford to stay at the Plaza. However, I had seen it in so many movies a visit seemed mandatory. How anyone could call the public areas "tired" is beyond me. It was beautiful, even better than I had imagined. There was a huge dining area serving brunch. Separated from the main areas by pots of flowers, it appeared to extend for half a block. The entire area was well-lit, and there were flowers, paintings, and sculptures everywhere. I wanted to move in--permantently. If that's "run down", then why doesn't my house look like that?

It's hard to believe first of all that an average joe could -- or would -- save enough money for a $4500 a night hotel. Secondly, don't you pal around with people who blow money like that, Merc? Can't your buddies tell you what the Plaza looks like? Why stoop to a mere travel board, where people routinely look for bargains, for help? Finally, I sure hope you make charitable donations once in a while -- do you have any idea what that kind of money can buy? Maybe Fodor's needs to create a "luxury trip" forum so those of us who spend a couple thousand on an entire week of vacationing don't need to listen to this kind of bragging. The post is simply inappropriate and invited ridicule. Like you care what the lobby looks like!

If anyone thinks $4500 a night is big bucks for a hotel room, let me tell you about other twisted priorities. Last night, I figured out what a major league baseball pitcher can make. At more than $17 million a year (yes, there are such people), he makes about $5,000 per pitch during the season! You get there this way. He pitches in 30 games and throws about 110 pitches if he goes the distance, which is doubtful. Pre-tax, that's $5,151 per pitch. Talk about stratospheric money!

Al, you are just so cool! OK, I admit it. I'm jealous of anyone who can make $5000 regardless of whether they even throw a strike!
