travellyn, I am nuts about luggage, too. I think there must be some connection. Maybe if I could just find the perfect suitcase...

gojacks, I don't understand why people bother to post on a thread they find boring. No one is forcing you to read it. I'm sure there are any number of subjects that fascinate YOU that would put me to sleep.

Like Travellyn and Marilyn I love looking for luggage. Maybe I'm searching for the perfect bag, maybe I want a 'better' bag than the one I bought at Marshall's for $20. And why is it when I go to Marshall's, TJ Maxx, Ross, etc. I have to look at the luggage?

Anyway, I start draming about what to take when I'm purchasing plane tickets and making hotel reservations. About a week ahead of time I go through and launder what is necessary and I pack the night before because I usually leave early on trips.

When I return either clothing is dumped immediately into laundry hamper, or more than likely stays inside the suitcase in the middle of the hallway for a week.

I don't hate or love packing.
I lay out the suitcase in our downstair's bedroom and ALWAYS pack the night before.
My husband loves to tease me by telling me he's packing his stuff in the morning because I freak out.
I do hate unpacking when I get back. If I don't do it the day we get back, the suitcase will sit in our bedroom for days before I ever get to it!

Like to pack, but hate to UNPACK. Might leave the clothes in the suitcase for a few weeks (and then wonder "where did my red blouse go?"

I wouldn't mind packing just for me, but when it's me, husband and 3 kids, I always say I pack for 4 1/2 (husband gets his stuff out and puts it in a pile). There is always that horrible point late the night before we leave, when I'm dead on my feet and still running around getting extra bateries for the kids' gameboys, swim goggles, snacks for the plane, etc. etc. etc. and husband is on the computer palying free cell "because there's nothing left to do." Every time I wonder if our marriage can survive!

Not really, because I'm always so happy to be going somewhere! (I'm one who takes too much, every time, and bring back one-third not worn, especially shoes!) I check the biggest part of my luggage so I don't worry too much about overpacking.

There is an interesting commentary going on here about the difference between the sexes....

My wife does not pack my stuff, I don't expect her to, she doesn't want to. Why do you ladies pack your husbands things? Does he have some physical ailment?

I admit that my wife has similar nuerosis (?) to those that have been mentioned. That's what I think is the sex thing, I know of no men with these issues. As long as you realize, admit and talk about this being an issue, why continue to torture yourself?

Just quit it! You are going to forget something, things will get wrinkled, you will think your posterior looks to big for those slacks, etc. etc.

Too simplistic? What would you expect from a man...;-)

My husband is color blind and I do have to be seen in public with him which is why I pack ("no honey, you can't take the canary yellow cargo pants with the zip off legs....").

As far as forgeting his skivvies, he would just go commando and be done with.

"Why do you ladies pack your husbands things?"

Because I'm better at it.
Because I have to appear in public with him and don't want him looking like an unmade bed.
Because I hate to see a grown man cry.

I will agree with Marilyn and add my own,
He has to carry it, I pack it (just kidding)
My husband was usually working that day and I was packing. I need to have SOME control in my life, so I pack and know what is going on the trip with me.
Even when I pack, he forgets things, ( jacket in London, socks in Paris) so it is better for him and our marriage if I am in charge of what goes with us and who folds it.

About Unpacking:
Does anyone else take plastic bags for worn clothes? I do, when they are worn - they go in the bag, which gets thrown in the suitcase.
When we are home, the bag gets emptied straight into the laundry basket, out of sight.
I have the always packed bag of toiletries so that stays in the bag.
Just shoes have to go back in the closet.
It gets easier the more you do it I need to practice some more~

We use plastic bags for laundry, then stuff them into a collapsible duffel bag for the trip home. When we get home, I just toss the duffel down the cellar stairs, in the general direction of the laundry room!

I love reading this thread. Glad to know I am not alone.

I always pack my husbands, because I have to be seen with him. I can't imagine what he would choose. Probably the same outfit for a week (lol).

Actually, the last time we were on vacation, most of his clothes were still clean and unworn by the end of a week, but all of mine had been worn due to my getting a spot or whatever on them. That is a rare thing. Usually it is the other way around.

Usually, I pack the day before, but find that the morning or day I am leaving for a trip, I usually have to use some of the items such as my toothbrush, etc, so I save those for the last minute, but have everything else packed. Worst for me is unpacking, and sometimes, my suitcase will sit for a week before it finally gets totally emptied, other than dirty clothes, which I also take 2 bags to sort them and have ready for the washer. Better yet, if we have a condo, they are clean before I get home.

Scarlett: The only thing I put in plastic (ziploc bags) is my underwear. With security the way it is these days, there's just something too icky about some strange man or woman going through my undies. And I'm sure they'd feel the same. But Eeewwwww...
I have to say I was surprised as well to read so many ladies packing for their hubbies. My hubby packs his own stuff, does quite a good job of it and dresses quite well . The only thing he tends to forget are his sunglasses! So he has quite a collection now!

About packing husbands:
Mine has been all over the world (without me & with me) and he is quite capable of packing. But since I am happy to do it for both of us, he just puts his clothes out and I take care of the rest.
Plastic bags:
A few years ago, Air France had some kind of problem, we have no idea how it happened, but our luggage was soaked and so were quite a few of our things in the luggage.
Since then, I have packed my things in plastic. Usually I use the plastic from the dry cleaners, plastic shopping bags, that hold folded sweaters, etc. I use Ziplocks for underwear, socks, anything that might leak or run if it got wet.
And shoes!
So during the trip, as they are used, the clothes go back into the plastic bags, where they stay until they get dumped into the laundry at home.
I found that plastic keeps things from wrinkling as much, I also use tissue paper when packing something really nice like a silk top or a good jacket/skirt.
I am overwhelmed with the urge to pack now~

Those plastic shower caps that you get in some hotels make great shoe bags.

Just for the record, DH chooses his own clothes, I just pack 'em so they look good upon arrival.

OK no one might believe me on this one, but...

I hate to pack and my BF loves to pack! That and he tends to over pack and I tend to have everything "just exact". You would think it would be the other way around!!

I'm also a list maker, and keep all of my travel size stuff in one bag ready to sort through.

My grandmother taught me one trick about packing after she sent me back with so many clothes I needed to buy another suitcase, and even then I barely made it under the weight limit!! She taught me to roll everything. Skirts, t-shirts, dresses, pants, you name it. It saves space (for us shoe hogs) and also helps it from getting wrinkled. I now keep everything rolled in my dressers because you can fit more clothes that way!!

By the way, I have the WORST kind of packing going on right now....MOVING!! So anytime you're feeling crabby about packing a suitcase, be glad you're not me packing an entire apartment!

Plastic bags can come in very handy. I like the ones you often get when you buy clothes or shoes, that have a drawstring at the top. For dirty clothes, I usually just use the bag provided for laundry at hotel. If I fill it, I ask for another one. I also am a firm believer in large, cheap, nylon tote bags. I found mine near the luggage dept. at Target for about $6. Folded, they take up almost no space in your suitcase; if everything won't fit when you start home, you have an extra HUGE bag to stuff things in. Who's to know it's full of dirty clothes?

As much as my husband would love for me to pick out all this clothes to take on a trip, I let him do it himself because he is perfectly capable.

I do the actual packing of those clothes, however, or they would not be fit to wear once we arrive. Hmmm...maybe I should let him start packing the clothes because he's actually a better presser than me.
