Do you need reservations at wineries in Napa/Sonoma to taste?

DH and I are planning a quick 3 day trip to Napa/Sonoma in April. Wineries we are interested in are Quintessa, Chateau St. Jean, Joseph Phelps, Far Niente, Artisa to name a few. We are not really interested in tours, as we have been on plenty, but tastings. do you need reservations at most places? thanks

I don't know about all of the wineries, but Quintessa is by appointment only. It is a beautiful building built into the hillside and the tasting is wonderful. We did not take the tour as that was full when we made our reservation.

At Phelps, you need a reservation. Not sure about the other ones. Your best bet is to visit each of the wineries websites. You will also get directions on how to get there.

Hi Lori,
You will also need an appointment at Far Niente, and I do not believe that they offer tastings alone - you must take the tour, as well. A couple of resources - napavalley.com and napavintners.com for the Napa Valley including maps, tasting room hours/appt info, etc. Also, depending upon where you're staying, the concierge or innkeeper may be helpful in setting up the appointments.
Have fun!

When talking to Schramsberg yesterday they told me that liquor laws require them to give a tour before tasting. Not sure if this is the case for all the wineries??

Pick up a wine country brochure at your hotel or rental car place and it will tell you if you need an appointment. We hit 10 fabulous wineries on our trip last weekend and only Frog's Leap and Cakebread required reservations. They both also required that you take the 30 minute tour while you taste. Almost all of the wineries have websites so you can also look them up to be sure.

Quite a few wineries have only tasting rooms; so no tours there are required. Example: Heitz Cellars.

Artesa and Ch. St. Jean do not require appointments. They are also notfar apart from one another.

BTW, the Artesa tasting room facility is a beatifully-done modern facility with one of the better sweeping view of the Napa area.

Good point, razzledazzle. Having driven by all these hundreds of wineries in both counties, got me confused.

Ch. S-J is in Sonoma and they have tasting fees.

Ask your concierge if they have any tasting passes. We recently stayed at the Sonoma Mission Inn and were given several to Sonoma places. Chateau St. Jean was one of them. ***kim***

We were up in Sonoma/St.Helena last weekend....Cakebread took us as walk-in's...it was the middle of the week and 3:30, no reservation needed! Cakebread is awesome, definitely suggested (its up by St. Helena).....Chateau St. Jean is terrific, we bought 6 bottles of their wine! I suggest going to wine country during the week, made all the difference in our trip..we went monday-friday!
