Do you dress up or dress down when flying?

When I go to the grocery store, I still care what I look like to the rest of the world,so I will naturally be aware of how I look when I fly to another country.
I have seen those rumpled baggy jeaned and sweateshirted folks walking up to the desk in a really good hotel and wondering why they are surprised when they are never really treated as specially as others, the ones who took the time and care to put on some real people clothes, not just the American uniform of sweats, jeans, and sneakers.
I guess it is just the way you were raised,I was not raised on a farm,so jeans are not in my wardrobe.

This is a very entertaining thread. I am amazed at the remarks people make, esspecially the negative ones about the way other people dress.
To me, it all boils down to this - wear what you think is appropriate for the situation and stop worrying about what everybody else is wearing.

I think I have my flying clothes all figured out. I like to fly in a denim, sleevless dress with big pockets. Depending on location, I wear a short or long sleeved t shirt.. the pockets are great for tickets, identification, hard candy, and tissues. a sweater is a must. I like the long skirts so I don't have to wear panyhose.

IF the airlines actually treated their customers like people instead of cattle and got you from point a to point b with the least amount of hassle and gave you a little more room in coach then people wouldn't dress like such slobs. The airlines are responsible for treating people like pigs. You treat someone like a pig long enough they act like a pig...

There is nothing wrong with wearing jeans on a plane--I don't recall anyone here saying there was. I think what most people are saying is that some people look like slobs in that they don't clean up. No matter what you have on if you are unclean, unkept, etc. you look like a slob.
If you look back a few years, you can see the trend has been to go "casual" more and more. Unfortunately there are those who take it to the extremes--tank tops, uncombed hair, sweats that are too tight ( some men wear them way too tight, showing off how little they have)etc.
Someone mentioned self respect--common sense and self respect are, for the most part, a thing of the past. Unwashed, uncombed and dirty clothes are easily corrected if you want to.

When I travel (and day to day) I always admire those older men and women (say over 50) who always seem to dress nice all the time. I do think younger people should take note and pay closer attention to our appearance. The older people probably relate to when flying was really a special way to travel. They always looked so much cleaner and take a lot more pride in their appearance than many in their 20's like myself. Shame on us. Jen

Is there a dress code for flying? Serious question. My cousin (around age 22) says he was denied boarding because he had shorts on. (no short, shorts, not dirty, no holes). He ran to an airport store and purchased some long pants to wear home. I told him I had never heard of such a thing.
Anyone ever run into anything like that?

I have to say that dressing for comfort is fine but i do agree with the people that sit next to a person for several hours wearing a tank top/shorts with hair hanging out all over is very disgusting.
I think jeans and t-shirts are fine as long as they and the people that are wearing them are clean. Cover up the upper arms and most of the legs.
I try to Fly on United and have been in First class a couple of times and was shocked that the the First flight attendent for the flight crew looked like she just got out of bed. She was dumpy, no makeup, and her hair sticking out all over.

Under 16: wear your jeans, mini's whatever
16-21: OK, dress in your jeans, college tee shirts, casuals
21-99: dress like the adults we're suppose to be. God forbid you wear shorts, tank tops, crop tops etc. Especially women, (sorry) but as often as I travel on business, it amazes me to see the get ups that women come up with! I recently sat next to a women approximately 30 who had a crop top on, showing about 5 inches of midrift and looked like she was dressed for the beach.
GIVE ME A BREAK!

I was always taught to dress nicely when travelling and to this day I continue to do so along with my husband and young children. It is embarrassing the way many people dress today - they appear as slobs. My biggest pet peeve is gym suits or tight leggings - yuk! One should always take pride in his/her appearance.

Dressing nicely has less to do with impressing other people, and more about taking pride in one's appearance. Many people are simply too lazy to dress nicely - it takes just too much effort. Others simply lack the upbringing and/or class to appear as a respectable mature adult. Thats it in a nut shell.

I don't care what anyone wears as long as they don't smell bad! On business I always wear something nice. On vacation this summer, the whole family wore hiking boots and jeans and carried their sweatshirts. There was no way I was taking up valuable suitcase room with hiking boots and more jeans!
