DO I RENT A CAR IN NYC?

The above advice to "totally stay away from the subway itself after dark" is a bit over-the-top. The subway is completely fine in the evening, and I'd ride it comfortably with a child in tow as late as 10 PM with no worries.
A classic NYC place for a 9 yr. old's b-day party is Serendipity 3 on 60th between 2d and 3d Aves, known for its frozen hot chocolate, ooey-gooey sundaes, and kitschy/girly decor. Make reservations. Do a search; I believe they have a web site.

Must chime in again. I agree with staying away from the end of the platform, but the "after dark" statement is totally unnecessary. The subway is well used and still crowded way after dark. You've lived here, you know. Just keep your son by the hand, use you common sense, and have a great time!

I second the advice on Serendipity for the 9 year old. It's really a great choice!
I also second the advice on forgetting the car in favor of public transportation. I comfortably ride the subways alone in Manhattan until 9-10 pm. A previous poster is correct that you can not only take the subway but also take advantage of the Long Island Railroad to Forest Hills. If you're uncomfortable with the subway, by all means take the LIRR as a safe public transportation alternative. It's no more than 15 minutes from NY penn station to Forest Hills. Enjoy your return visit to NYC with your granddaughter.

Serendipity 3 seems to be what I am looking for for my 9 yr. old granddaughter. Will she think its a neat place? What kind of pricing am I looking at per person? Don't forget I'm from Florida the home of the early bird.
Does anyone think its necessary to stay in the city for a few days instead of staying in Forest Hills the entire week? Will it be more advantageous or should I save my money?

It is very popular with kids that age. If the sandwiches, etc. seem too pricey to you, you could just go for dessert.
Manhattan is not a cheap place, and accommodation especially is not a bargain. Use the resource of your friends' place in Queens, ans spend your vacation money having fun.

My eight year old loved Mars 2112. It was just different enough to not be babyish to her. There are terribly long wait times on the weekend 2-3 hours, we went on a Monday at lunch. You have to ride on a flight simulator to get in and then Martians walk through and visit. It was expensive ($9-15 per person) but everywhere was sky-high even McDonald's which is pretty cool in Times Square. That was what my 6 year old told his class about-McDonald's, didn't even remember Statue of Liberty or Empire State Building.
