Universal Studio is movie-related rides. Some are fun, but none really exhilirating. Islands of Adventure is more like a traditional amusement park - lots of roller coasters and other thrill rides - it's a great park for thrill rides.
So "which is better" depends on what your family wants. For me (age 27), I can't wait to go back to Islands of Adventure for all the great rides. Is the 10 year old tall enough for roller coasters? If not, stick with the Studio.

You can do the Studio in one day (but that assumes that there aren't massive lines for things). When I was there last, it was the first week of May, and there were little to no lines for any ride. A group of 20-somethings did everything we wanted to see easily in one day (in fact, my husband and I did the big rides at Islands of Adventure in a couple hours).
I believe that any multiple day pass at Universal automatically covers both parks, and they're right next to each other. I suspect that a one day pass means you have to pick one park only.
As for cheap tickets, I've no clue - maybe ebay?

Islands of Adventure is a LOT more than just roller coasters. The only big coasters are the Hulk and Dueling Dragons. The park is beautifully themed and has wonderful attractions. I MUCH prefer it to Universal Studios. I always go with a friend who hates coasters and anything with a drop and she loved Islands of Adventure. Go to the Universal website for detailed descriptions of the attractions. Also go to www.disboards.com and scroll down to the Universal forums. Loads of great info.

You can also get discounted tickets directly from Disneyworld by ordering in advance. AAA offers discounted tickets and MWR offers great tickets to military members.
