Discounted Broadway tickets

Hi
Its been 11 years since iv'e been to NYC. Back then you could go to Times Square and buy tickets for Broadway shows at discounted prices for that days performaces. My question is, Can you still do that and further more, there was a location in the world trade center that did the same thing, is it still in operation? Smaller lines there. Thanks for your help!!

Yes, both venues still exist. The only difference is that the TKTS location in the World Trade Center is much more popular than it was 11 years ago.

The Times Square TKTS opens at 10 a.m. for matinee tickets and 3 p.m. for evening performances. For matinees, get in line around 9-9:15; for evenings, between 1 and 2. However, you can totally avoid lines if you check the booth after 5-5:30 in the evening. Usually there are no lines. And, your luck could go either way: You could luck in with last-minute ticket arrivals....or there could be fewer choices. For matinees, there seems to be lines almost up to the 2 p.m. curtain (or 3 p.m. on Sundays).
If you do wait in line, figure 20-30 minutes of waiting time for each block length of the line. (The line often snakes the equivalent of 3-4 blocks!)
As for the World Trade Center, I believe it opens at 11 a.m. (Monday thru Friday only). From reports on the forum, the line can be very long by the time it opens.

Jim,

Maybe I can help you out here. I experienced both of the TKTS outlets last week and came away with the tickets I wanted both times. The times previously posted are correct. I arrived a few minutes after the WTC outlet opened due to slow subways and was in line for about 45 minutes. The next day since we were doing things in Midtown, I went to the Times Square outlet and got there about 15 minutes before it opened. I got my tickets about an hour after it opened. The lines are very long, but they move very quickly since they take only cash or travelers checks. I highly recommend this option of obtaining Broadway tickets. However, don't expect to get Lion King or Aida tickets here because Lion King especially is sold out well in advance. But I really don't remember any other shows that they didn't have at TKTS. Please let me know if you have any questions.

There is another way to get discounted tickets now. The Playbill website (www.playbill.com) has discounts on Broadway and off-Broadway shows that you can print out and take directly to the box office. You don't have to wait to book the day of the show. You must register (for free) on the website and then you can access the show discounts.

The site also has hotel and restaurant discounts and often has discounts on shows at Lincoln Center (opera, ballet) as well.

Playbill is a good site. You register (for free and no catch). You don't actually have to take the coupon to the box office, but that's an option. They give you a code number to get tickets for the particular show. You can call the number given and give the code to get discounted tickets - usually Tuesday through Thursday, but some week-ends on certain plays.

There is a site called broadwayonline.com that has offers very discount coupons very similar to playbill. I believe it actually contains a bit more information than playbill. Try them both.

One postscript about buying the discounted tickets on the two website offers: You still pay the service fee ($5.75 per ticket) on phone orders.
