We visited the lava on May 25th and it was quite close. They were saying 2 miles out but it was really only about 1.6 by GPS. I'm told the best time to go is about 5pm. See it in the light (without a competing sun) and then stay for the dramatic view after sunset. We were there at 4pma nd didn't want to hang around for another 3 hours. No place to sit and too hot!

I'm told it just started flowing over land about a month ago. Prior to that up to last October it was running to the sea in underground tubes. We planned this trip for over a year and am very happy we got to see it.

A full trip report of Kauai and the Big Island is forthcoming.

We are planning a trip to Oahu the end of June, and I am hoping to introduce my "Meat and Potatoes" family from Utah to some new foods.

Can someone please tell me what Dim Sum is? It sounds like this might be a new food experience for them.
Thanks Tina

Aloha! Just got back from China. Great food, including dim sum!

You can always go to google for more information about dim sum. For starters:

http://chinesefood.about.com/gi/dyna...Faa070700a.htm

I have revised my recommendations, in this way: the cheapest price in Chinatown is now matched by Wo Fat. It is the oldest restaurant in Hawaii (1882), in the heart of Chinatown, and tastes better than Golden Palace. You can experiment to your heart's content for about $5 per person.

If you want a personal guide, contact me at [email protected]. If I'm not off-island, I'll be happy to arrange something with you and all you have to do is feed me! A foodie tour for five bucks! Can't beat the price!

Welcome back from China, GoGo Kai Ung. Did they have my snake venom from the Guangzhou Hospital??

Anyway, just took our mom to Mei Sum for dinner. Turns out they now have extended dim sum hours!! They serve dim sum from morning till 8:45 p.m. I have not been there for lunch lately, so I don't know if they have done away with the dim sum cart....but while we were there for dinner, we were ordering dim sum off a menu. That's a nice touch if you're in a small group or are more in the mood for picking rather than eating a full meal with noodles/rice, meat, and veggies.
