This morning I traveled to the local supermarket. I was looking for a tomato to compliment the chicken salad sandwich that was going to be my lunch. I was shocked to see that they wanted $2.99 a pound for tomatoes. Needless to say I refused to buy. They also had Chilean Sea Bass for $21.99 a pound. Chicken was $1.49 and New York Strip was $5.99 a pound. It just might be time to leave Florida and travel elsewhere.

I was shopping at a SuperTarget in Dallas on MOnday.Oranges were $.51 each.The week before Christmas they were $.76 each.I bought a bushell.They are good.When I fly back to LA tomorrow I'll pack those that left over.

Unless you find the tomatoes on sale here in the SF Bay area, then $2.99 is about right. Don't know what part of the chicken you were talking about, but chicken breast run $2.99 at Costco and that sounds like a good price for New York Strip.

Well, don't move to the NY metro area. Our tomato and chicken prices are the same. Chilean Sea Bass is an over-fished fish (and of course, imported). I've seen it go for a lot more.

You should shop at MOM'S -- oh no, that's would be my son, lol. Comes for a visit and clean me out (he's really not that bad, I sort of beg him to take food because he lives on pasta).

Was in a Wendy's a few weeks ago, and they had a sign that tomatoes are only by request -- it's a shortage related to Katrina (or so they said).

The price of tomatoes is due to a severe shortage right now. This is a result of Florida hurricantes, floods in California and bug problems in Mexico. Even if you want to pay those prices the quality is just terrible. Supposedly a tomato tragedy trifecta of sorts.

Bob, I'd love to pay $1.49 for boneless skinless chicken breasts. We pay average of $1.80 wholesale for our Florida restaurant. Did you vote for the minimum wage increase by the way?

Also shortage on peanut oil and Louisiana style hot sauce, from Katrina just off the top of my head. K really did impact our economy in so many ways.

Sure, if you need a tomato right this moment, you go to a supermarket and get it for $2.99.

Or you can do it at a farmers non-organic for much less.

Or if you have ethnic areas with small groceries, then you're a winner price-wise!

Just got back from the supermarket. Navel oranges and grapefruit are 50 cents each - last week they were 69 cents each and looked awful. This week they look wonderful. Yellow onions were on sale for 99 cents for 3 pound bags - last week they were $2.99. Tyson roasting chickens are 59 cents/lb.

Best deal is a sale on Keebler and Kellogg products - buy a combination of 4 for $10.00 and for free get either mix or match 2 (4) packs of Dannon Smoothie Yogurt or 2 (8) packs of Dannon Light and Fit Yogurt (worth $7.00 at retail). Supermarket is totally out of yogurt.

All of the tomatoes look awful and they start at $2.99/lb.

$5.99 is a good price for NY Strip steak. Last week untrimmed slabs were on sale for $3.99/lb. (cutting and trimming was free), but there appeared to be a sizeable amount of waste.

bobrad, where do you live? Maybe some of us would like to move there. Try 4.29 for a lb of tomatoes but at least they were very tasty.

Pat...they are really, and I am an Angelino!! I think these particular oranges are from South Texas.Good grapefruit from there too.

Am I the only one who doesn't look at prices for gas and food? Ya gotta eat and ya gotta get places. I don't know that you have much choice in the matter.

I just purchased chicken breast yesterday. I live in the Sacramento Valley (south end) in California. Just checked the price of the chicken breast. $5.99 a pound..yes $5.99. The beefstew was $2.99 a pound. I noticed one small steak was somewhere around $12.00 (a ribeye with bone in).

So don't come to my area. Chicken at $1.49 a pound sounds like a real bargin.

I feel so sorry for people that have children to feed, I don't know how they do it.

$3.99 a gallon for milk is the "on sale" price where I live. Regular supermarket (Safeway, Sack and Save) prices are closer to $6.00 a gallon. Good thing we've got Costco - but it's still close to $4.00.

LoveItaly, I still remember how we did it. We checked the local newspapers for sales every week, and loaded up. Then we cooked from what's available. Fruits and veggies from the farmers' market or small groceries. It was not a problem for us.

The most expensive chicken for me is boneless skinless breast on sale for 1.99 This is probably because I save on everything but travels!
