There are two routes from Denver, but Independence Pass is only open from around Memorial Day through October, weather-permitting.
The year-round route (I-70 west to Glenwood Springs, then east on Hwy 82 to Aspen), is about 3 to 3-1/2 hours. It's a relatively easy drive and very pretty.
The summer route over Independence Pass has spectacular scenery but considered a scary road because of the steep drop-offs and narrow parts of the road. You'd take I-70 W to 91 S through Leadville to 82 W. That route would take 3-1/2 to 4 hours, but well worth the effort!

Thanks a lot tekwriter. My sis and I are going to a july wedding in Denver and were wondering if we wanted to explore outside Denver. Other than Denver I've only been to Beaver Creek and Vail, both during ski season. OUr next decision is whether to drive or fly. Thanks again.
