Margie,

Most of the cases of Dengue in Hawaii have been reported from Hana. According to the radio news this morning Hana has been identified as the 'epicenter' for Dengue. However, a lot of spraying has been going on to kill the mosquitos - so it is possible that by December it will be fine to drive to Hana. You can check for local Hawaii news at starbulletin.com - this is a local paper website and should have lots on information on Dengue.

Jan,

I really can't give advice one way or another. I think people in Hana are being advised to wear lots of bug spray to avoid being bitten. So, bug spray could be a way to make the trip to Hana safe/safer - but I am not an expert on this. I'd suggest checking with your hotel or the tour operator. There is a lot of great things to see on Maui even if you can't make the trip to Hana.

Just returned from Maui. We did the road to Hana after covering ourselves with bug spray (didn't help--still got bit). The trip is great, but many of the attractions once you get to Hana are closed--anywhere there is standing water. You'll be given all the warnings once you arrive this weekend. Pack bug spray--many of the stores are sold out.

We just came back from Maui and the Big Island. We were going to take the Road to Hana but decided we'll do it next time (so now there has to be a next time!). I just figured it probably wasn't worth any risk and I loved Maui so much that I'm sure I'll be going back one day.

Instead of Hana, we took the day we had planned for that and drove up to Haleakala, then we drove around the north half of the island. It was a great day, a lot of time in the car but some amazing views and sights.

You will have a wonderful trip no matter what you do. You can't go wrong in Maui!!

Aloha Margie, I would not make the trip to Hana right now but the CDC announced yesterday that the Dengue outbreak is over. So come December It would seem a viable option - pending further information and a good covering of bug spray. I live in Wailea on the opposite side of the island and we have had no problems here at all. Have a great trip and if you don't go to Hana, go on a whale cruise instead - not to be missed!!
