DC to Chincoteague Island, VA
We will be driving from DC to Chincoteague Island, VA on a Saturday in August. Online mapping shows the route as:
Hwy 50 east across Chesapeake Bay and then south down the peninsula. Then Hwy 13 at Salsbury, MD, to Hwy 175 east. Is this the best route to take? Also, what sort of traffic delays should we expect. The estimate for the drive is 3.5 hours - should we plan on more time?
We will be staying at a rental house on Chincoteague, so we need to do some shopping on the way - beach towels and chairs, charcoal, paper products, food and beverages, and that sort of thing. Is there someplace on Chincoteague Island or should we stop someplace enroute? Any suggestions?

That route sounds fine. Perhaps others know shorter routes. U may have back ups at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Saturday is the typical rental turn over so lots of people like u will be heading up for beach rentals as well as the hordes of weekenders going to the various beaches. You will go by various shopping centers along the way to stop and by stuff. Haven't been to Chincoteague in years, so can't speak to what is there, but I imagine there are places to buy what you need.

That is the main route. There will probably be bridge traffic due to the rental changeover.
There are Walmarts right off of rt 50 in Easton and Cambridge. And a Target in Easton. Salisbury also has all the major cheap box stores to buy what you need.
