md42--can you give us more info? what meal are you going for? Do you live in D.C. or just visiting? in some ways, Old Ebbitt is more casual than 1789 and they are in totally different neighborhoods; depending on what you are looking for, it is possible that there are better choices in both of those neighborhoods! Let us know and there are several folks here from D.C. willing to help,

md42, is this for your post-graduation dinner that you posted about a few days ago? The Ebbitt and 1749 are worlds apart in style, food, ambience, etc.

I've only been to Old Ebbitt Grill. When working for law firm, had our Christmas Party there. We passed the bar/dining upstairs to be led downstairs to our own private room for dining and an open bar. I don't remember the food as being spectacular but I did enjoy it. As stated by someone else there might be better places to go. I remember a secretary's day celebration that we went to an Italian Restaurant in the area and the food was delicious! It was in the same area as the old Scholl's Cafeteria, which I know has been out of business for a while. Any help for me, I can't think of the name of this place.
