October is a very nice time of year on the central coast of California. It's not as busy as summer and the weather can actually be warmer and sunnier as we get coastal fog in summer. What's your budget for accommodations? Vacation rentals are illegal in Carmel. Taste of Carmel is a fun food and wine event at the Mission if you're here on October 5th. The Refuge would make a nice girls outing and you can continue farther into Carmel Valley to the village area where there are shops, restaurants and wine tasting rooms. The drive to Carmel Valley Village is picturesque with rolling hills and some vineyards. Point Lobos just south of Carmel is a state reserve with some easy hiking trails and gorgeous coastal scenery. Hwy 1 south of Carmel is a beautiful drive though in October you'll likely only be able to reach the northern end of Big Sur Village due to a collapsed bridge from the bad winter we had but the 26 miles that are open are still very much worth seeing. The coastal recreational trail that runs along the coast of Monterey and Pacific Grove is also very nice. There's boutique shopping, wine tasting and galleries in downtown Carmel. Our closest major airport is San Jose. Monterey is a small regional airport.

I'll second Albuquerque and Santa Fe. The first week of October is the annual Balloon Fiesta, which is pretty incredible. http://www.balloonfiesta.com/

There are several other B&B's in Pacific Grove, along with hotels. Check out booking.com

"Check out booking.com"...

Also Airbnb.com which can be considerably less expensive, and more space, for a group of more than 2.

On the Monterey Peninsula only Pacific Grove has legal vacation rentals. Mission Ranch about a mile south of downtown Carmel is a converted former dairy with views overlooking sheep pasture, Carmel State River Beach and Point Lobos in the distance http://www.missionranchcarmel.com/ They have rooms that start at a lower price point than Seven Gables but it would be helpful if you gave an actual $ budget, how many people, how many rooms, etc.

Patty is correct -- airbnb/vacation rentals aren't really a viable option in the Monterey/Carmel area since they are mostly illegal except in PG.

Give us your budget - then we can steer you towards doable properties.

As Patty says, from what I've heard Pacific Grove allows short-term rentals and is also a great location for touring the area. You can probably find an accommodation for 4 at a significantly lower rate than 2 hotel rooms with more space and a kitchen, always nice to have if you don't feel like going out for every meal.

Does Anyone know of a nice beach cottage to rent around Carmel?? Maybe $300 to 400 a night for 4.....or am I dreaming? I think we have decided on that area. First mother daughter trip ever. Have been looking on VRBO. Daughters treating their 65 year old mother. Does anyone have any great restaurants, must see stops shops etc. to add to the great information above.

Carmel Cottage Inn has individual cottages and is a block from Carmel Beach https://www.carmelcottageinn.com/

Look for vacation rentals in Pacific Grove between Lovers Point and Asilomar.

Nothing here will be right on the beach. Our coastline is mostly rocky shore with a few stretches of beach in between.

What kind of food do you like?

Oh, good. Unless you need concierge-type services, I don't think you can do better. In the coming week I'll be both a host & a guest.

Our favorite view restaurant on the peninsula is The Bench which is located downstairs at the Lodge at Pebble Beach. If you're heading toward Big Sur, Rocky Point about 12 miles south of Carmel has dramatic cliff side views. The food is of acceptable quality. The patio of Mission Ranch opens for bar service at 4pm and is a nice place on a sunny day.

Most downtown Carmel restaurants don't have any kind of a view as town is several blocks from the ocean. Some of our favorites are La Balena, Il Grillo, Andre's Bouchee, Cultura and Basil and for fine dining, Aubergine. In Pacific Grove we like Passionfish and Jeninni.
