Dallas - Hotels, restaurants

I love the Melrose Hotel on Oak Lawn. It's a beautiful 1920's building and has been restored to its original condition. Very elegant. The restaurant and bar are fun places, too.

Sorry for the dual reply...that will teach me to hit the "post my reply" more than once when I think the computer is acting up!

The Mansion on Turtle Creek is the most fabulous/ elegant hotel in Dallas. (I think) It is considered a small hotel which makes it intimate and the service is personal and impeccable. It is always rated highly on the Gold List with 5 stars. It is home to Dean Fearing famous resturant. And, yes, it is fabulous if you are looking for an elegant dining experience. The bar has live music on the weekends and is really special and cozy. The Mansion is represented by Rosewood Hotels and Small Luxury Hotels of the World---what more can I say, they are tops in their field. We love it!
One other suggestion, if you are looking for resort type accomodations, look at Four Seasons Resort "villas". The rooms are to die for and typical of FS luxury. They have a great pool and full spa facilities, golf, tennis, etc. We love to stay there in the warmer months.
We go to Dallas all the time, if I can be of further assistance, please contact me. Hope this helps.

Personally, I would not recommend the Melrose Hotel. The only time I stayed there was two years ago and the service was SO bad. I mean really really extraordinarily bad. A Motel Six would've been better. The front desk changed rates (UP of course) from those promised, cancelled reservations and put people in another hotel down the street, and was rude about trying to fix their mistakes. The room service orders either came wrong or didn't come at all. Perhaps the management has changed, but I would not touch that place with a ten foot pole. Neither would my friends who were there at the time. Lots of other great places in Dallas. The Mansion on Turtle Creek is probably the most renowned but quite pricey, great if you are up to that.

Depending on how much you wish to spend, one hotel is the Crescent Court--also a Rosewood property. It is just north of downtown & has trolley & bus service to downtown. It is located near the McKinney Avenue restaurant area. Two places I enjoy are Lombardi's and Macaroni Grill.

Wow. I'm surprised to hear that the Melrose so disappointed someone. I've had nothing but pleasurable stays there on each of my six trips to Dallas in the last 12 months. I second the Mansion and Crescent Court suggestions, too, but be aware that these hotels are very pricey!

the boutique hotel thing hasn't really caught on in dallas, and i had to really think about interesting hotels that i would recommend. i actually like the melrose too, though i've only attended events there. The Mansion at turtle creek is beautiful but a bit stuffy for my tastes; the food is good but so expensive (if you want to try it but at a lower cost consider breakfast, which is great.) I like the Hotel St. Germaine, a smaller more european place. Foodwise, some places i like are Voltaire _ pricey, over-designed but great new-french food; Abacus and Citizen _ pan-Asian; Green Room, in deep ellum club district, kinda funky but great food. Have heard good things about Jeroboam but haven't been yet. Oh, and Ciudad, Mexico City=style Mexican......
