How about Springfield, IL for the nre Lincoln Museum. Or for bating any of the big lakes in Tenn. Or, for entertainment, Branson, MO. As a history buff, I'd include some Civil War Battlefields such as Vicksburg, MS or Chattonga, TN. There is also ther Amana Colonies in Iowa that may hold some interest. There is also supposed to be some decent wineries in MO and IN, but haven't been to them yet.
Once you are in CO, there is Colorado Springs with thr Garden of the Gods and access to Pikes Peak and the Air Force Academy.

Hey Boom Boom, thanks for the info. Our son lives in Tennessee, so we pretty much know that area.
I had heard about wineries in Mo and will now investigate further.
I will also check out how close Branson will be to our route. Should be worth a stop.
Once in Denver, we have friends to visit and I am sure they will show us the town. Then on to Boulder to see more friends. We are looking forward to the trip.
Thanks again to all who responded.

We have driven from Ohio to Denver in 2 days. Ohio to KC(about 13 hours) and KC to Denver (I think about 10 hours). The drive from KC to Denver on 70 is long and boring so I would suggest maybe looking into a more southern route to Denver

If you give the route you are taking, it may help us. For me, hill country in Texas is great. San Antonio and Austin, also smaller towns like Gruene and Fredricksburg. Outlet shopping at Prime Outlets in San Marcos, north of San Antonio, was fun. Austin has great dining and there are lots of posts here in Fodor's on the subject!

I was thinking the same thing as trippinkpj - do you have a prefered route? Places mentioned in MO, TN etc are nice, but certainly are out of the way if you're driving a more direct route from FL to Denver. Do you care how direct it is?
Besides places trippinkpj mentioned, there's of course New Orleans, Cajun Country, Vicksburg & Natchez.
