We've never been to New Orleans, have the week of Thanksgiving off and are wanting to check out New Orleans. We're not big drinkers or partiers, just want to have a nice week. Any recommendations on hotels and other stuff? Any info is appreicated! THANK YOU!

Get a hotel or B&B in the French Quarter area. For your first trip, it's important to stay "in the heart" of the city. There is a large African-American football game (Bayou Classic) Thanksgiving weekend, so plan ahead so you can get the room you want!

Thanksgiving is a very busy time in the Quarter (mostly due to the game mentioned above). We have never been able to get decent hotel rates that time of year (and I've even had to change plane tickets because I've stupidly bought them before checking hotels - and I think I did it twice too, forgetting about the game - ughh)!

So instead of Thanksgiving, we go the weekend just before Christmas each year. It's quieter than normal (but still lively enough) and hotel rates are great.

Thank you for your advice. Maybe we'll wait till December and go, and miss the crowds due to the game. I had no idea what else was going on, so very much appreciate your comments.

I have a studio to let over Thanksgiving weekend.

It is an easy, quick, four-block walk to the Quarter. I do it all the time, though walking with others is best. (There is also a bar on the corner, so you can even have a cocktail for your walk.)


our street is extremely well lit and safe. We have over the years gotten the occasional smashed car window, but it is New Orleans so don’t leave stuff conspicuously in sight.

There is ample street parking.

The studio is around 600 square feet and is the second floor of the slaves quarters of an 1830s building.

The bathroom was added on to the building, so it’s big and modern. The rest of the studio is a single large room with small oven/stove, sink, microwave and full sized refrigerator/freezer against the wall.

The sofa pulls out to a Queen sized bed and the bed is a full. The weather at that time of year is beautiful you can sleep with the windows open and enjoy hearing the horse drawn carriages or riverboat calliope.

2400 block of Chartres is only a four block walk to the Quarter? Isn't it more like ten blocks? Am I way off on that?

If you can wait until Christmas to come, it's very quiet the week before, but starts to get crowded the week after as people arrive in for New Year's. Avoid Thanksgiving week-end if at all possible.

2400 block of Chartres is a few blocks to the French Market but a longer walk to anything else in the Quarter. Plus, no advertising, please...it's against Fodor's rules!
