Colonial Williamsburg, VA

Does anyone know how far the historic district is from the Amtrak station in Williamsburg? Is it possible to walk to the historic area from the train station? Thanks.

It's possible -- about 6 blocks. Not fun with a lot of luggage or kids, though. But with a backpack? Not a problem. Is this a stop-over or are you headed to a hotel?

Well, I'll be by myself and only have 2 small bags . . .on the way to a hotel.

Which hotel? Most of them have complimentary shuttle service. You can call from the pay phone at the Amtrak station and they'll pick you up. There's usually a small crowd getting off the train with you, and often there are others going to the same hotel via the shuttle.

There's *some* local bus service, but only during weekdays and saturday. I've stayed at a Days Inn (900 Richmond Rd?) and at a Super8 (1220 Richmond Rd) and carried luggage to them from the train station, and walked to the historic area ... nice in nice weather, but awful in bad weather. If you're staying at Governor's Inn, it's truly a stone's throw, and not far from Hospitality House either.
